14.32

"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next we perform repentance.

14.33

"We, your disciples, reverently invite the Buddhas of the ten directions, the twelve divisions of scriptures, all worthy and noble ones, the eight classes of devas and nāgas, the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, and the present great assembly to bear witness. We, your disciples, have accumulated immeasurable and boundless sins from beginningless time until now. Today, with utmost sincerity, we confess and repent them, taking refuge in the Buddha:

14.34

"Namo Buddha Boundless Purity of the East. Namo Buddha Meru of the South. Namo Buddha Accumulation of Diamond Steps of the West. Namo Buddha Foremost of Worthies of the North. Namo Buddha Greatly Arisen Radiance of the Southeast. Namo Buddha Wondrous Jewel of the Southwest. Namo Buddha One Vehicle of the Northwest. Namo Buddha Solitary Stepper Who Destroys the Net of Māra of the Northeast. Namo Buddha Fearless Mind of the Nadir. Namo Buddha Immeasurable Honored King Free from Defilement of the Zenith.

14.35

"We take refuge in all such Triratna throughout empty space and the ten directions.

14.36

"We, your disciples, now on behalf of all sentient beings and ourselves, take refuge and repent before the Buddhas of the ten directions. Throughout immeasurable kalpas, all sentient beings have failed to recognize the Buddhas and the kindness of their parents, have failed to understand wholesome dharmas and have committed all manner of evils; relying haughtily on their caste, clan, and wealth, in the prime of life they gave themselves to heedlessness and committed all evil deeds; their minds conceived unwholesome thoughts and their mouths committed evil karmas, acting according to their impulses without seeing their faults. In the foolish actions of ordinary mortals, covered by the darkness of ignorance, they associated with bad friends and their minds were perturbed by kleśas; by reason of the five desires, anger and hatred arose in their minds; not knowing contentment, they committed all manner of evils; associating with the un-noble, stinginess and jealousy arose in them. Driven by poverty, they committed evil through treachery and deceit; bound to others, they lived in constant terror, lacking independence and committing all manner of evils; greed, anger, and delusion disturbed their minds, and pressed by craving, they committed all manner of evils. Relying on food, clothing, and female beauty, their afflictions burned intensely, their minds became enamored with and attached to other men, or they conceived lustful thoughts toward cows, horses, donkeys, mules, sheep, and all kinds of beasts and varied creatures, failing to follow the Buddha's conduct and committing all manner of evils. All such immeasurable and boundless sins accumulated through the three karmas of body, speech, and mind—we now fully repent them all.

14.37

"We, your disciples, from beginningless time until today, may have failed to respect the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha of noble ones—all such sins we now fully repent. We may have failed to respect pratyekabuddhas and bodhisattvas—all such sins we now fully repent. Due to lack of wisdom, we slandered the True Dharma, failed to know respect for parents, elders, and superiors, were covered by foolish delusion, were arrogant and heedless, and committed all manner of evils out of greed, anger, and delusion—all such sins we now fully repent. Being fond of drinking alcohol without knowing moderation, or offering alcohol to monks, to precept-holders, to bhikṣuṇīs, or to those who have stilled the mind, or to those in meditative absorption—all such immeasurable and boundless sins, we today summon our utmost minds to take refuge and repent.

14.38

"We, your disciples, on account of all the evil committed throughout beginningless kalpas, have experienced great sorrow and suffering, poverty, distress, burning grief, terror, and fear; dreading evil karma, our minds are ever timid and base, without a moment of joy anywhere. The presently existing Greatly Compassionate Bhagavats of the ten directions are able to remove all fear from sentient beings; may you accept our sincere repentance. We now repent all past evils; we sincerely disclose our currently created karma; what we have not yet done we shall never dare to do; what we have already done we dare not conceal. The three kinds of bodily karma, the four kinds of verbal karma, and the three kinds of mental karma—we now fully repent them all. The perilous perils of saṃsāra, the perilous afflictions of manifold lusts and folly—all such perils we now fully repent. The peril of a flighty and restless mind, the peril of associating with bad friends, the perilous difficulties of the three realms of existence, and the peril of the three poisons; the peril of encountering no difficulties, the peril of meeting with good times, the peril of cultivating merits, and the difficulty of encountering a Buddha—all such difficulties and perils we now fully repent.

14.39

"We, your disciples, from beginningless kalpas up to our present bodies, have killed and harmed the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in numbers beyond knowing; we have stolen the property of the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in amounts beyond knowing; toward the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, we have harbored depraved thoughts, in numbers beyond knowing.

14.40

"We have lied and deceived the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in numbers beyond knowing; we have used frivolous speech to tease and make sport of the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in numbers beyond knowing; we have used harsh speech to scold, insult, slander, and revile the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in numbers beyond knowing; we have used divisive speech to incite strife and destroy harmony among the Triratna, master monks, parents, relatives of the six relations, good spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, in numbers beyond knowing.

14.41

"Or we have broken the five precepts, the eight precepts, the ten precepts, the ten wholesome precepts, the two hundred and fifty precepts, the five hundred precepts, the three collections of bodhisattva precepts, the ten inexhaustible precepts, and even all precepts and all rules of deportment. Committing them ourselves, teaching others to do so, and rejoicing upon seeing them done, in numbers beyond knowing—such sins are also countless as the boundless dust motes of the great earth in the ten directions.

14.42

"The sins we have committed are also boundless and countless. Space is boundless, and the sins we have committed are likewise boundless; expedient means are boundless, and the sins we have committed are likewise boundless; the dharma-nature is boundless, and the sins we have committed are likewise boundless; the dharmadhātu is boundless, and the sins we have committed are likewise boundless; sentient beings are boundless, and our robbing and killing of them is likewise boundless; the Triratna is boundless, and our violation and harming of it is likewise boundless; the categories of precepts are boundless, and our transgressions of them are likewise boundless. Such sins as these cannot be known above by the bodhisattvas or below by the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; only Buddha and Buddha alone can know the extent of our sins. Now before the Triratna and before the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, we disclose and repent them, not daring to conceal them. We pray only that the Triratna of the ten directions and the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu will hear our repentance.

14.43

"May we, your disciples, by virtue of the merit generated by this repentance, vow in life after life to abandon the womb forever, taking form according to our wishes, being reborn to attain the power of the six supernormal knowledges to rescue and gather in all suffering multitudes; as space and the dharmadhātu are endless, so also are our vows. For all sentient beings in the hells and hungry ghosts, impoverished and in distress, as well as those oppressed by suffering and kleśas in all realms of existence—may all such sufferings be completely extinguished.

14.44

"We further vow that we, your disciples, by virtue of the merit accomplished by this repentance, will leave saṃsāra and reach the shore of great wisdom, turning the unsurpassable wheel subtly and purely, with all our aspirations fulfilled and complete.

14.45

"We further vow that the blind may see, the deaf may hear, the mute may speak, the naked may obtain clothing, and the impoverished and destitute may obtain treasuries of jewels, their storehouses overflowing with nothing lacking; that all may experience peace, stability, and joy, to the extent that not a single person suffers.

14.46

"We further vow that sentient beings may treat one another with loving-kindness and look upon one another with the eye of a Buddha, their appearance upright and dignified, pleasing to all who behold them, their bodies adorned with supreme, wondrous forms, becoming companions of bodhi and acting as true, good spiritual friends."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra on the Questions and Answers of Baoda on the Retribution of Śramaṇas

14.48

Shortly thereafter, Baoda proceeded further into the Hell of Flaying Flesh. What is called the Hell of Flaying Flesh? This hell is forty yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed all around by iron walls and covered above with an iron net, blazing with smoke and fire no differently than before. On the ground are iron pikes, and fire also blazes fiercely; in the middle is an iron bed, more than five hundred paces square, on which fire blazes to burn the sinners.

14.49

At the southern gate there were six hundred sinners, resembling human forms yet not human, ten feet in body height, and devoid of mouth, eyes, hands, feet, and the six sense faculties.

14.50

At that time, horse-headed rākṣasas held iron hooks in their hands and gouged at their bodies. The bodies of the sinners moved, seemingly with human voices, crying out these words: 'What sin have we committed now, to suffer such agony?'

14.51

The hell wardens dragged their bodies into the hell, where iron stakes pierced their bodies upright. As blood flowed from their bodies, fire entered within. Furthermore, hungry ghosts came to eat their flesh, hungry dogs came to drink their blood, iron crows came to peck at their sinews, and fierce winds blew upon the sinners. In a single day and night they suffered a myriad kinds of torment, dying a thousand times and being reborn a thousand times, dying ten thousand times and being reborn ten thousand times. Even if they attained human rebirth, they would be impoverished, ignorant, and unable to understand the Buddha's words.

14.52

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, saying, 'What sins did these śramaṇas commit to suffer such torment?'

14.53

The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, saying, 'These śramaṇas received the Buddha's prohibitive precepts, yet did not seek unexcelled bodhi; they sought only present fame and gain, and because of their greed for drinking wine, they broke the Dharma and violated the precepts with thirty-six faults. Through these causes and conditions, they fell into this hell.'

14.54

Hearing this, Baoda wept sorrowfully and departed.
