20.20

"We disciples now, having made general confession of all karma, shall now proceed to make separate, individual confessions one by one. Whether general or separate, coarse or fine, light or heavy, spoken or unspoken, according to their categories, we pray that all may be eradicated. As for separate confession: first confess the three [unwholesome actions] of body, next confess the four of speech, and for all remaining hindrances prostrate in succession. Among the three bodily actions, the first is killing and injuring. As the sūtras explain, using oneself as a simile: do not kill, do not use the rod. Though beasts and birds differ [from human beings], in cherishing life and fearing death their case is the same. If we trace these sentient beings from beginningless time, they may have been our fathers, mothers, brothers, and six kinds of kin; through the conditions of karma they transmigrated in the six destinies, being born and dying, changing forms and altering their retributions, no longer recognising one another. Yet now we raise up harm, eating their flesh and cutting off the seeds of great compassion. For this reason the Buddha said: 'Even when obtaining other food, one should regard it like the flesh of one's own son during a time of famine. How much more so the eating of this fish and flesh?' He also said: 'Killing sentient beings for profit and using money to purchase the flesh of sentient beings: both are evil karma, and upon death one falls into the Raurava Hell.' Thus we know that killing, injuring, and eating [meat] incur sins as deep as rivers and seas, and faults heavier than hills and mountains. Yet we disciples, from beginningless time, not meeting good spiritual friends, have all committed such karma. For this reason, the sūtra says: 'The sin of killing and injuring can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and hungry ghosts to suffer torment. If among animals, they receive bodies such as tigers, dogs, jackals, wolves, hawks, and falcons, or receive bodies such as venomous snakes, vipers, and scorpions, constantly harbouring malice; or they receive bodies such as roe deer, stags, and bears, constantly harbouring terror. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of karmic retribution: first, frequent illness; second, a shortened life.' Since killing, injuring, and eating have such immeasurable and diverse kinds of karmic retributions, therefore, we disciples today prostrate ourselves with the utmost devotion and with supreme sincerity take refuge in the Buddha.

20.22

"Namas to all such Three Jewels of the ten directions throughout the entirety of space."

20.23

"We disciples, from beginningless time until the present day, possessing this mind and consciousness, have constantly harboured malice and cruelty, lacking a mind of compassionate mercy. Whether out of greed giving rise to killing, out of hatred, out of delusion, or out of pride committing murder; or employing evil contrivances, making vows to kill, praying to kill, or killing by means of curses; or breaking and draining lakes and ponds, setting fire to mountains and wildernesses, hunting in fields and catching fish; or kindling fires with the wind, flying falcons and loosing hounds, thereby harassing and harming all sentient beings of the six destinies: such sins are limitless and boundless. Today, with the utmost sincerity, we take refuge and make repentance.

20.24

"Or with clubs, stakes, cudgels, poles, spears, bows, and crossbows, pelting and shooting at birds of the air and beasts of the field; or with mesh nets, casting nets, and fishing hooks, dredging and scooping up aquatic creatures—fish, softshell turtles, giant turtles, gavials, shrimp, clams, snails, mussels, and all those dwelling in dampness—leaving those of water, land, and air nowhere to hide or flee; or raising chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, dogs, hogs, geese, ducks, and the like, whether to supply our own kitchens or selling them to others to be slaughtered, so that their cries of grief have not yet ceased when their feathers are plucked, their scales torn and broken, their heads severed from their bodies, their bones and flesh smashed to pieces, flayed, butchered, and sliced, broiled, roasted, boiled, and grilled, suffering bitter, excruciating agony, wrongfully inflicted on the innocent merely to obtain a moment's pleasure, what the mouth gains in taste being so little, extending merely past three inches of the tongue's root; yet the retribution and burden of these sins spans eternal kalpas. For all such sins, today with utmost sincerity we take refuge and make repentance.

20.25

"Furthermore, from beginningless time until the present day, whether raising armies to attack one another, contending upon the battlefields where two battle lines faced each other and slaughtered one another; or killing by oneself, instructing others to kill, or rejoicing upon hearing of killing; or practicing the butcher's trade and slicing flesh, hiring oneself out to inflict punishments and executions, cooking and slaughtering the lives of others, acting without mercy; or giving free rein to rage, brandishing spears and handling blades, whether beheading, stabbing, or pushing into pits and moats; or drowning with water, or blocking holes and destroying nests, pounding and crushing with earth and stones; or trampling and crushing all sentient beings with chariots and horses: such sins are limitless and boundless. Today we disclose them, take refuge, and make repentance.

20.26

"Furthermore, from beginningless time, whether irrigating dry fields, aborting fetuses and causing miscarriages, breaking eggs and destroying nests, using poisons and witchcraft to injure and kill sentient beings; tilling the soil and digging the earth to plant fields and gardens; raising silkworms and boiling cocoons; keeping cats to catch mice, injuring and killing ever more exceedingly; or swatting and slapping mosquitoes, gadflies, greenbottles, flies, bees, and scorpions; pinching and squashing fleas and lice; or burning and clearing away dung and sweepings, unblocking and draining ditches and drains to the wrongful injury of all; or eating fruits, using grains and rice, or water, or vegetables, recklessly killing sentient beings; or kindling firewood, or exposing open lamps and candles to burn all manner of insects; or consuming sauces and vinegar without watching for writhing creatures; or pouring out boiling water, scalding and killing insects and ants; even so, throughout the four deportments of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, constantly injuring and killing minute living beings flying in the air and clinging to the earth: we disciples, due to the darkness of ordinary consciousness, were unconscious and unaware. Today we disclose them, take refuge, and make repentance.

20.27

"Furthermore, we disciples, from beginningless time until the present day, whether with whips, canes, cangues, chains, yokes, and fetters, pressing, making stand, beating, torturing, striking, casting down, kicking and trampling with hands and feet, binding, caging, and tying, cutting off water and grain; using such various evil contrivances to torment sentient beings: today with utmost sincerity, toward the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the noble Saṅgha, we take refuge and make repentance.

20.28

"May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated through this repentance of killing, harming, and other sins, aspire in life after life to attain an adamantine body with infinite lifespan, forever free from enmity and hatred, devoid of thoughts of killing, and attaining the stage of regarding all sentient beings as an only child. If we see those in peril, disaster, emergency, or distress, may we not spare our own bodies and lives, but employ skillful means to rescue and liberate them, causing them to attain emancipation; and thereafter preach for them the wondrous, correct Dharma, so that all sentient beings who see our forms or perceive our shadows may all receive peace and bliss, and those who hear our names or listen to our voices may have all fears entirely removed."

Sūtra on the Questions of Baoda Regarding the Retribution of Śramaṇas in the Mahāyāna Lotus

20.30

Baoda walked forward for a short while and entered a Dismemberment Hell. Why is it named the Dismemberment Hell? That hell is thirty yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded all around by iron walls with an iron net covering it above. In the middle, fierce fires blaze vehemently and transparently, and there are iron caltrops strewn everywhere over its floor. Moreover, flying halberds come to pierce the sinners, and there is a great iron rack on which the bodies of the sinners are hung, their limbs and joints dismembered.

20.31

At that time, within the eastern gate there were countless sinners who, seeing it from afar, wept bitterly and wailed, casting their whole bodies onto the ground and crying out these words: 'For what sin of mine have I now entered into this place?' The wardens and yakṣas, holding great axes in their hands, aimed at their heads and chopped them, then bound their bodies with iron chains, while fierce fires burned their forms and flying halberds pierced them indiscriminately. Then the sinners fell at every step until they reached beneath the rack. The wardens and yakṣas seized and dragged the sinners, and with large iron saws dismembered them joint by joint, blood flowing everywhere, the pain and suffering of myriad kinds. Then there appeared the shapes of sheep, cattle, donkeys, horses, insects, birds, and miscellaneous kinds of beasts, which came to drink their blood and eat their flesh; for these beasts all demanded from the sinners their original life and their original flesh. At that time, the sinners had no words to reply, and all the beasts gnawed and bit them. The agony and bitter torment were unbearable; the sinners groaned and howled, blood streaming from their mouths and eyes, their weeping and sobbing resounding upward to the heavens. Such bitter torments were suffered unboundedly day and night, dying a thousand times and being reborn a thousand times, dying ten thousand times and being reborn ten thousand times, through thousands of myriads of kalpas without any time of release. If they should afterward be released, they shall fall into the animal realm, and for hundreds of billions of thousands of lifetimes be eaten by their enemies.

20.32

Bodhisattva Baoda asked: 'What karma did these śramaṇas commit that they now suffer this torment?'

20.33

The rākṣasa replied: 'These sinners, having received the Buddha's precepts, did not seek the unsurpassed, truly real, and wondrous Dharma, but merely looked at what was before their eyes, believing in heterodox and inverted views; arrogant, conceited, and wanton, their minds harboured malice and cruelty, and without compassion they killed and harmed sentient beings, dismembering the lineage of the Buddha. Due to these causes and conditions, they suffer such punishment. If they afterward attain human form, for hundreds and thousands of lifetimes their faculties will be incomplete: deaf, blind, mute, lacking hands or feet, their bodies covered with many sores constantly running with pus and blood; having severed the lives of others, they shall receive the retribution of a short lifespan.'

20.34

Hearing this, Baoda wept with grief and departed.
