21.19

"Namo the wonderful Dharma spoken by those Buddhas; Namo the wonderful Dharmakāya of those Buddhas; Namo the immeasurable and boundless merit of the thirty-two marks and eighty minor signs of those Buddhas. Namo the various bodhimaṇḍas, various bodhi trees, various images, various wonderful stūpas, and the wonderful places where they went, came, sat, and lay down of those Buddhas; namas the irreversible wheel of Dharma of those Buddhas. Bodhisattvas, the Mahāsaṅgha, the irreversible Saṅgha of Śrāvakas, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, of various forms and appearances, having faith in the Tathāgata's wheel of Dharma; turning the Tathāgata's wheel of Dharma, to all the inconceivable bodhisattva-mahāsattvas I pay homage. I pay homage to the Tathāgata's Dharmakāya, the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the aggregate of morality, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation—immeasurable and boundless merits such as these; dedicating these merits and bestowing them upon all sentient beings, wishing that they attain anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ. Śāriputra! In the kalpa of Good Eye, seventy nayutas of Buddhas appeared in the world. Śāriputra! In the kalpa of Good Vision, seventy-two koṭis of Buddhas appeared in the world.

21.20

"Śāriputra! In the kalpa of Brahma Praise, eighteen thousand Buddhas appeared in the world. Śāriputra! In the kalpa named Past, thirty-two thousand Buddhas appeared in the world. Śāriputra! In the kalpa of Adornment, eighty-four thousand Buddhas appeared in the world. Śāriputra! You all should pay homage to such immeasurable and boundless Buddhas."

21.21

The Buddha said to Śāriputra: "If a kulaputra or kuladuhitṛ wishes to eradicate all sins, they should wash and bathe purely, put on fresh, clean clothes, recite the names of such Buddhas, make offerings, and bow in reverence, saying thus: 'From beginningless worlds until now, whatever unwholesome deeds I have committed through body, speech, and mind, up to slandering the Vaipulya sūtras and committing the five heinous offenses—may they all be extinguished.'

21.22

"Śāriputra! If a kulaputra or kuladuhitṛ wishes to fulfill the practices of the six pāramitās, wishes to dedicate them toward unsurpassed bodhi, and wishes to fulfill all the pāramitās of all bodhisattvas, they should speak thus: 'I train in emulation of all bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the past, future, and present: practicing great renunciation, tearing open the chest and taking out the heart to bestow upon sentient beings, like Bodhisattva Wisdom Victory and King of Kāśi; giving away wives, children, and possessions to the poor and destitute, like Bodhisattva Irreversible, King Arkirṇa, Sudāna, and King Alaṃkāra; entering the hells to save suffering sentient beings, like Bodhisattva Great Compassion and Devaputra Good Eye; rescuing sentient beings who commit evil deeds, like Bodhisattva Good Conduct and King Victorious Conduct; giving away the precious heavenly crown upon the crown of the head along with flaying the scalp, like Bodhisattva Victorious Body and Devaputra Ratnacūḍa; giving eyes in charity, like Bodhisattva Loving Action and King Candraprabha; giving ears and nose in charity, like Bodhisattva Free from Enmity and Devaputra Victorious Departure; giving teeth in charity, like Bodhisattva Flower Tooth and the Six-Tusked Elephant King; giving the tongue, like Bodhisattva Irreversible and King Good Face; giving the hands, like Bodhisattva Constant Vigor and King Firm Mind; giving blood, like Bodhisattva Dharma Action and Devaputra Moon Thought; giving flesh and marrow, like Bodhisattva Peace and King All-Giver; giving the large and small intestines, liver, lungs, spleen, and kidneys, like Bodhisattva Good Virtue and King Self-Freed from All Evils; giving all large and small limbs and joints of the body, like Bodhisattva Dharma Sovereign and Devaputra Light Victory; giving the skin, like Bodhisattva Pure Womb, Devaputra Golden Color, and the Golden Deer King; giving fingers and toes, like Bodhisattva Firm Vigor and King Golden Color; giving fingernails and toenails, like Bodhisattva Inexhaustible and Devaputra Seeking Good Dharma; entering a great fire pit for the sake of seeking the Dharma, like Bodhisattva Vigor and the energetic King Seeking Sand Wonder; selling the body, cutting open the body, breaking bones, and extracting marrow for the sake of seeking the Dharma, like Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita and King Golden Firmness; enduring all afflictions, like Bodhisattva Seeking Wonderful Dharma and the Great King Swift Practice; giving away the great earth of the four continents and all adornments, like Bodhisattva Mahāsthāmaprāpta and Devaputra Victorious Merit; giving the body, like Bodhisattva Mahāsattva and King Mahābala; and offering their own body to all poor, distressed, and suffering sentient beings to serve as a servant and attendant, like King Śibi and others.'

21.23

"‘To state it in brief, may I likewise accomplish all the pāramitā practices of all bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present; and with all the wonderful incense, flower garlands, and wonderful musical entertainments of the worlds of the ten directions, I rejoice in making offerings to the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, and further dedicate this merit to bestow upon all sentient beings. May it be that through this merit, sentient beings do not fall into the evil destinies. Through this merit, may I fulfill the eighty-four thousand pāramitā practices, swiftly receive the prediction of anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ, swiftly attain the irreversible great stage, and swiftly accomplish unsurpassed bodhi.’

21.24

"Śāriputra! You should revere and pay homage to all the Buddhas of the ten directions.

21.26

"Śāriputra! Sitting here, with the pure and unimpeded divine eye surpassing that of humans and devas, I see in the eastern direction many hundreds of Buddhas, many thousands of Buddhas, many hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, many hundreds of millions of Buddhas, many hundreds of thousands of koṭis of Buddhas, many hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas of Buddhas, immeasurable asaṃkhyeya Buddhas, inconceivable Buddhas, immeasurable Buddhas, of various names, various clans, various worlds, and various Buddha-lands, surrounded by various bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās, surrounded and revered by various devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, manuṣyāmanuṣyas, and the like—all of which I presently see just as if gazing upon an āmalaka fruit in the palm of my hand.

21.27

“Śāriputra! If there are good men, good women, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, or upāsikās who believe my words and uphold, read, and recite these names of the Buddhas, they should bathe and wash themselves, don fresh, clean robes, and during the initial, middle, and final periods of the day, as well as the initial, middle, and final periods of the night, rise from their seats, bare their right shoulder, place their right knee upon the ground, single-mindedly recite these names of the Buddhas, make offerings, and pay homage, saying: ‘I now pay reverent homage to the Buddhas of the ten directions known to the Tathāgata.’

21.28

“Śāriputra! Such good men, good women, bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās who make offerings and pay homage in this way will attain immeasurable merits. Śāriputra! If one desires to attain the stage of a śrāvaka, the stage of a pratyekabuddha, or anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ, one should pay homage to the Buddhas of the ten directions, and all of these will be attained. One should further say: ‘All these accumulations of merit, known to the Buddha Tathāgatas, I dedicate entirely toward anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ.’

21.29

“Śāriputra! You should take refuge in all the Buddhas of the eastern direction:

21.30

21.31

“Next, pay homage to the great canon wheel of Dharma of the twelve divisions of scriptures.

21.32

“Reverently pay homage to all the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the ten directions:

21.33

“Namo Dale Shuo Bodhisattva, namo Baotan Hua Bodhisattva, namo Shangxing Bodhisattva, namo Wubianxing Bodhisattva, namo Anlixing Bodhisattva, namo Jingxing Bodhisattva, namo Xiuwang Hua Bodhisattva, namo Xijian Bodhisattva, namo Miaoyin Bodhisattva, namo Deqin Jingjin Bodhisattva, namo Jingzang Bodhisattva, namo Jingyan Bodhisattva, namo Miaode Bodhisattva, namo Cishi Bodhisattva, namo Shan Siyi Bodhisattva, namo Kongwu Bodhisattva, namo Shentong Hua Bodhisattva, namo Guangying Bodhisattva, namo Jigen Bodhisattva, namo Yuanhui Bodhisattva, namo Zhongzhu Bodhisattva, namo Zhixing Bodhisattva, namo Ding Zizai Wang Bodhisattva, namo Faxiang Bodhisattva, namo Guangxiang Bodhisattva, namo Guangyan Bodhisattva, namo Dayan Bodhisattva, namo Changcan Bodhisattva, namo Xixiang Bodhisattva, namo Xiwang Bodhisattva, namo Bianyi Bodhisattva, namo Sheju Bodhisattva, namo Baoyong Bodhisattva, namo Baojian Bodhisattva, namo Diwang Bodhisattva, namo Mingwang Bodhisattva, namo Wuyuan Guan Bodhisattva, namo Huiji Bodhisattva, namo Baosheng Bodhisattva, namo Tianwang Bodhisattva.

21.34

“Take refuge in immeasurable and boundless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas such as these throughout the worlds of the ten directions.

21.35

“Reverently pay homage to all the worthy and noble ones, the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

21.36

“Having paid homage to the Triratna, next perform repentance.

21.37

“We disciples next repent of our karmic actions of robbery and theft. The sūtras say: ‘If an object belongs to another and is guarded by another, among such things one does not take even a single blade of grass or a single leaf without it being given, how much less commit theft?’ Yet sentient beings, seeing only present benefit, take by various unjust means, thereby bringing upon themselves this burden of future disaster. Therefore the sūtras say: ‘The sin of robbery and theft can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and the hungry ghosts to undergo suffering. If in the animal realm, they receive the forms of oxen, horses, donkeys, mules, camels, and the like, repaying their past debts with their physical strength, flesh, and blood. If born among humans, they become servants and slaves of others, their clothing not covering their forms, their food insufficient to sustain life, destitute, distressed, and with human decencies almost exhausted.’ Since robbery and theft carry such painful retribution, for this reason, we disciples today with utmost devotion bow our heads and take refuge in the Buddhas.

21.38

“Namo Duozhi Buddha of the eastern direction, namo Daji Buddha of the southern direction, namo Jingzhi Buddha of the western direction, namo Zhicheng Buddha of the northern direction, namo Chijie Wang Buddha of the south-eastern direction, namo Zengyi Shanfa Buddha of the south-western direction, namo Shanfang Xiang Buddha of the north-western direction, namo Xukong Jingwang Buddha of the north-eastern direction, namo Shizi Buddha of the nadir, namo Nikong Guangming Buddha of the zenith.

21.39

“Take refuge in all the Triratna such as these throughout the ten directions, exhausting the dharma-realm of empty space.

21.40

“From beginningless time until the present day, we disciples have either stolen the wealth and treasures of others, raised blades to forcibly rob them, or relied on our physical power to coerce and take; or relied on official authority, or borrowed influence, using high pillories and heavy fetters to wrongly oppress the innocent, swallowing illicit goods and torturing the upright into falsehood, by which causes and conditions our bodies became entrapped in the net of the law. Or, holding corrupt office, we took possession of others’ property, encroaching on public goods to benefit our private interests, or encroaching on private goods to benefit the public; harming that side to profit this side, profiting that side to harm this side; cutting from others to enrich ourselves, promising with our mouths while begrudging in our hearts. Or we illicitly evaded rents and assessments, stealthily avoided tolls and customs, concealed official levies and taxes, or hid and embezzled them. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, filled with shame, we take refuge and repent.

21.41

“Or we took the property of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha without it being given: whether it was property for scriptures and images, property for repairing stūpas and monasteries, property for offerings to the resident Saṅgha, or property intended for the Saṅgha of the four directions; or we stole it, mistakenly misused it, or relied on influence not to return it; or we borrowed it ourselves or lent it to others, or exchanged, borrowed, leaked, or falsely misdirected it; or we jumbled and indiscriminately used the property of the Triratna; or with the grains, rice, firewood, ginger, fermented beans, paste, vinegar, vegetables, fruits, money, silks, bamboo, timber, coloured silks, banners, canopies, incense, flowers, oil, and candles of the Saṅgha, we indulged our personal desires and caprices. Or we promised to donate items to the Triratna but deceptively failed to give them, either using them ourselves or giving them to others; or we plucked the flowers and fruits of the Buddha or used the flower-garland items of the Saṅgha, using the wealth of the Triratna to secretly profit ourselves. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, filled with shame, we disclose and repent them.

21.42

“Furthermore, from beginningless time until the present day, toward acquaintances, friends, preceptors, fellow monks, classmates, parents, siblings, and the six relations and kin, with whom we lived and stayed together in common, in every single necessity of life, we deceived and defrauded one another. Or in the neighbourhood and adjacent plots, we moved fences and extended walls, usurped lands and residences, altered boundary markers and swapped signs, seized fields and gardens, and using public pretexts for private gain, seized others’ shops and rural estates. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today we disclose them, take refuge, and repent.

21.43

“Furthermore, from beginningless time until the present day, we have attacked cities and razed towns, burned villages and destroyed stockades, secretly sold freeborn people, and enticed away others’ slaves and maidservants. Or we framed and oppressed innocent people, causing their bodies to be wounded and stained with blood, their persons bound in penal chains, their family patrimony shattered, their flesh and blood separated in life, scattered across different towns, cut off from one another in life and death. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, filled with shame, we disclose and repent them.

21.44

“Furthermore, from beginningless time until the present day, traveling with merchants to barter goods, or trading in shops and markets, we used light scales and small bushels, shaved off inches and feet, stole fractions and grains, and cheated by pinches and pecks; exchanging coarse goods for fine, and swapping short for long, using hundreds of deceitful tricks hoping for the slightest profit. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, filled with shame, we take refuge and repent.

21.45

“Furthermore, from beginningless time until the present day, we breached walls, blocked roads to plunder, defaulted on debts and interest, failed to pay debts and broke agreements, lying to people's faces contrary to our own hearts and words. Or through unrighteous ways we dispossessed and seized the property of spirits, beasts, and the four modes of birth; or, falsely relying on divination and physiognomy, took people’s wealth and treasures; and so forth, down to seeking profit through profit, evilly seeking, insatiably seeking, never satiated and never content. Transgressions such as these are immeasurable, boundless, and cannot be fully spoken; today, with utmost devotion, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the Honoured Dharma, and the Noble Assembly, we take refuge and repent.

21.46

“May we disciples, by relying on the merits produced from repenting these sins of robbery and theft, in life after life attain the cintāmaṇi, constantly raining down the seven precious treasures, supreme and exquisite garments, hundreds of flavours of ambrosia, and various medicinal decoctions, arriving as soon as summoned in accordance with whatever is needed, with all sentient beings being free from the notions of stealing and seizing, and all being able to have few desires, know contentment, be untainted and unattached, always delight in giving, rush to relieve and rescue on the path, discarding head, eyes, marrow, and brain like spittle, dedicating all to fulfilling dānapāramitā.”

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra of the Śramaṇa Baoda’s Questions and Answers on Retribution

21.48

Presently, Baoda went forward and further entered the Bleating and Wailing Hell. In that hell, fierce fires blazed furiously, smoke and flames bursting forth together, and the sinners who entered it suffered myriad forms of torment.

21.49

From the western gate several śramaṇas came, entering into it, their groaning and wailing shaking the ground. Horse-headed rākṣasas held iron clubs in their hands and struck at their heads; the sinners wailed, bleating like sheep as they ran, and the hell-warden yakṣas vied with one another to beat them. Running to hide, they found no ground; running toward the eastern gate, it immediately shut, and so likewise with the southern, western, and northern gates. For a day and a night they endured sinful suffering and pain, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it.

21.50

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasas, saying: "What kinds of sins did these śramaṇas commit to receive such retribution?"

21.51

The horse-headed rākṣasas replied, saying: "These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha, yet in their minds had no compassionate thought; they beat and clubbed animals and were entirely lacking in compassion. Through this cause and condition they receive such punishment."

21.52

Baoda, having heard this, wept sorrowfully and departed.
