"Having paid homage to the triratna, next perform kṣamā again:
22.15
"Disciples, with utmost sincerity, repent of the sin of lustful desire! A sūtra says: 'Merely because of lustful desire one is shut within the prison of delusion, sinking in the river of saṃsāra with no one able to escape.' It is through the conditions of these five desires that sentient beings have drifted through saṃsāra from the beginningless past. In the course of a single kalpa, the accumulated bones of a single sentient being would equal Mount Vipula at Rājagṛha, the mother's milk one has drunk would equal the waters of the four oceans, and the blood shed from one's body would surpass even this; the tears shed by one's parents, siblings, and six kinds of relations weeping at one's death would be as the ice of the four oceans. Therefore, it is said: 'When there is craving, there is birth; when craving is exhausted, [birth] ceases. Thus we know that craving and love are the root of saṃsāra.' For this reason, a sūtra says: 'The sin of lustful desire can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and among hungry ghosts to suffer torment; if among animals, one receives bodies such as those of snipes, sparrows, and mandarin ducks; if born among human beings, one's wife will not be chaste and good, and one's family and dependents will not be to one's liking.' Since lustful desire incurs such evil karmic fruit, we disciples today, with utmost sincerity, bow our heads to the ground and take refuge in the Buddhas!"
22.16
"Namo to the Buddha Wheel of Light of the eastern direction; namo to the Buddha Opening Light of the southern direction; namo to the Buddha Practicing Wisdom of the western direction; namo to the Buddha Great Vaidūrya of the northern direction; namo to the Buddha Delighting in the Lotus Crest of the southeastern direction; namo to the Buddha Harmony of Wisdom of the southwestern direction; namo to the Buddha Unsurpassed Victorious Honoured One of the northwestern direction; namo to the Buddha Pure Eyes Free of Defilement of the northeastern direction; namo to the Buddha Complete with Light of the nadir; namo to the Buddha Most Pure Immeasurable Banner of the zenith.
22.17
"We pay homage to all such Triratnas throughout the ten directions and the entirety of empty space.
22.18
"We, your disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, have perhaps committed adultery with the wives and concubines of others or seized other men's women, violated the chaste and defiled bhikṣuṇīs, broken others' celibate practice (brahmacarya) and coerced them unrighteously, gazed with impure minds and improper looks, teasing and mocking in our speech; or brought shame upon others' families and defiled their virtuous and good reputations; or engaged in impure conduct with men or the five types of [sexually ambiguous] persons. Transgressions such as these are limitless and boundless. Today, with utmost sincerity, we take refuge and make kṣamā.
22.19
"We, your disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, have perhaps taken female bodies, with minds like wild horses, constantly licentious day after day, never settled for a single moment. Constantly harboring depraved thoughts and perpetually giving rise to lustful ideations, or in saṅghārāmas and assembly halls, having no mind to listen to the Dharma, our eyes constantly staring with lust; or desiring śramaṇas and ruining other men. Giving no credence to the Buddha-Dharma, giving free rein to lustful passions, causing our minds to drift upon the great sea, darkly losing sight of the shore; or defiling the three robes and Dharma vestments of the Saṅgha; or engaging in impure conduct within the courtyards and halls of monasteries, groping and fondling one another. Transgressions such as these are limitless and boundless. Today, with shame and remorse, with our whole hearts we make kṣamā.
22.20
"Furthermore, we, your disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, have perhaps taken female bodies and constantly harbored lust, or usurped other women's husbands and infatuated men; or made talismans and spells to curse and hex other wives to bring them affliction—such people having little merit and being possessed by evil spirits, so that various illness-causing demons thereby found an opportunity, and failing to meet a good physician, they eventually died. Transgressions such as these are limitless and boundless. Today, with shame and remorse, disclosing and repenting our faults, with utmost sincerity we bow our heads to the ground, take refuge, and make kṣamā.
22.21
"Furthermore, we, your disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, have perhaps, with our eyes [craving] form, been attached to black and yellow, red and green, vermilion and purple, rare curios and jeweled ornaments; or seized upon the marks of men and women—their height, shortness, fairness, darkness, and alluring postures—giving rise to unlawful thoughts; or, with our ears coveting fine sounds—the musical notes, strings, pipes, theatrical entertainment, and singing; or seized upon the marks of men's and women's voices, speech, weeping, and laughing, giving rise to unlawful thoughts; or, with our noses relying upon renowned fragrances—musk, secluded orchids, saffron, and storax—giving rise to unlawful thoughts; or, with our tongues coveting fine tastes—fresh, savory, sweet, and rich meats and blood of living beings to nourish our four great elements, further increasing the root of suffering—giving rise to unlawful thoughts; or, with our bodies taking pleasure in flowers, brocades, embroideries, silks, gauzes, and all manner of smooth, fine, seven-jeweled splendid garments, giving rise to unlawful thoughts; or, with our minds having many scattered thoughts, whatever they touch turns contrary to the Dharma. Harboring these six kinds of ideation, the transgressions created are especially severe. Transgressions such as these are limitless and boundless. Today, with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas, the revered Dharma, and the noble Sangha of the ten directions, we take refuge and make kṣamā.
22.22
"May we, your disciples, through the merit generated by this kṣamā of sins of sexual desire and the like, in life after life be naturally born by transformation without relying on the womb, pure and spotless, resplendent with marks and signs, with our six sense faculties bright, sharp, and clear, fully comprehending that affection and love are like fetters. May we contemplate these six dusts as illusions and phantoms, definitely feel disgust and detachment toward the realms of the five desires, not give rise to depraved thoughts even in our dreams, and never be moved by internal or external conditions.
22.23
"May the merit of repenting the eye faculty enable these eyes to see through the ten directions, beholding the pure Dharmakāya of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas free from dualistic marks. May the merit of repenting the ear faculty enable these ears to constantly hear the true Dharma spoken by all the Buddhas and noble sages of the ten directions, and to practice in accordance with the teaching. May the merit of repenting the nose faculty enable this nose to constantly smell the incense of Gandhavyūha that enters the stage of the Dharma, abandoning the foul stench of birth-and-death. May the merit of repenting the tongue faculty enable this tongue to constantly feast on the food of Dharma joy and dhyāna bliss, not coveting the taste of the flesh and blood of living beings. May the merit of repenting the body faculty enable this body to wear the Tathāgata's robes, don the armor of patience, recline on the bed of fearlessness, and sit upon the seat of the four dhyānas. May the merit of repenting the mind faculty enable this mind to accomplish the ten notions, thoroughly master the five sciences, deeply contemplate the empty and equal principle of the two truths, give rise to the ten wondrous practices from expedient wisdom, enter the flowing stream of Dharma with every thought increasing in clarity, and manifest the Tathāgata's great forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas (anutpattikadharmakṣānti)."
22.24
Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra of Baoda's Questions and Answers on the Karmic Retribution of Śramaṇas
22.25
Baoda then stepped forward and entered the Hooked-Genitals Hell. Why is it called the Hooked-Genitals Hell? That hell is thirty yojanas in length and breadth. Within it, flowing fire pours out and spreads entirely across the ground; its four walls are just the same. In the middle are countless sinners. The hell-warden yakṣas hold iron hooks in their hands, aim at the genitals of the sinners, and hook them. Fire blazes from the hooks and penetrates upward into their chests and hearts; fire blazes atop their hearts, piercing through both abdomen and back. Because of their retribution for lustful karma, [the flames] transform into women, appearing just as those they had previously seen during their lives. Once the sinners see them, the fire of lust arises and they run toward them. The bodies of those women are made of vajra-iron, blazing with fiery heat. When [the sinners] reach them, they embrace the sinners; upon being embraced, [the sinners'] bodies are crushed to pieces. [The women] then press their mouths to theirs and eat their lips, and their bodies are also devoured. When consumed, they are reborn; once reborn, they are eaten again. The same happens to those women who lust after men: their minds of lust are unsettled, and the fire of lust blazes constantly. Such bitter torment and intense pain are hard to bear. At this time, the multitude of sinners still have no repentance. In a single day and night, they undergo limitless punishment, dying a thousand deaths and being born a thousand times, dying ten thousand deaths and being born ten thousand times, and only after passing through immeasurable hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas do they attain release. Due to the residue of their karmic fruit, they are born among animals as filth-dwelling worms. After two hundred thousand lifetimes, they attain birth among humans; for five hundred lifetimes they die in the womb, and for another five hundred lifetimes after being born, their sex cannot be discerned, their eyes are malformed, they are destitute, orphaned, and exposed, their lifespans are short, or sometimes when they have a wife, she is violated by others, or they themselves covet the women of others, unable to restrain themselves, perpetually cutting off their lineage.
22.26
Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, "What deeds did these śramaṇas commit to undergo such punishment?"
22.27
The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, "These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha but were unable to keep them purely; thus they engaged in sexual desire and indulged their six senses. Due to these causes and conditions, they receive such punishment."
22.28
Hearing this, Baoda wept with sorrow and departed.
