24.3

"Reverently pay homage to all the great bodhisattvas, mahāsattvas, of the ten directions.

24.4

24.5

"Namas to all such measureless and boundless great bodhisattvas, mahāsattvas, of the worlds of the ten directions.

24.6

"Reverently pay homage to all the worthy and noble ones among the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

24.7

"Having paid homage to the triratna, next perform kṣamā again.

24.8

"We disciples, having already completed the kṣamā of the three [transgressions] of the body and the four of speech, next perform kṣamā for all obstructions committed against the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha. Therefore, it is said in the sūtras: 'A human body is difficult to obtain, the Buddha's Dharma is difficult to hear, the Saṅgha of monks is difficult to encounter, faithful devotion is difficult to generate, the six sense organs are difficult to possess complete, a good friend is difficult to obtain, and the mind of dread is difficult to arouse.' Yet now we have planted good roots in past lives, obtained this human body with its six sense organs complete, and moreover encountered good friends and been able to hear the true Dharma; yet in the meantime, each of us has been unable to be fully diligent and zealous, and we fear that in the future we will long be submerged in myriad sufferings with no time of escape. Therefore, today we must with supreme sincerity, shame, and remorse, bow our heads to the ground and take refuge in the Buddha.

24.9

"Namo Dharmaparvatavijaya Buddha of the eastern direction; namo Ghoṣasaṃcaya Buddha of the southern direction; namo Dharmacaryāpradīpa Buddha of the western direction; namo Jayagarbha Buddha of the northern direction; namo Kāmadamaneśvara Buddha of the southeastern direction; namo Vikīrṇaprabhāvarāja Buddha of the southwestern direction; namo Dharmakṛtodgata Buddha of the northwestern direction; namo Sarvāprameyābhijñāvaśavartin Buddha of the northeastern direction; namo Mahāsaṅghadharmaśrī Buddha of the nadir; namo Sarvakṣetrasaṃpanna Buddha of the zenith.

24.10

"Namas to all the triratna throughout the entirety of empty space in the ten directions.

24.11

"We disciples, from anādikāla until today, have always had our minds veiled by ignorance, our karmāvaraṇa being heavy. Seeing statues of the Buddha, we have failed to be wholeheartedly reverent; we have slighted and disdained the Saṅgha of monks, acted cruelly toward good friends, destroyed stūpas, ruined monasteries, burned statues, and shed the blood of the Buddha's body. Or, dwelling in ornate halls ourselves, we have placed the venerable statues in base and lowly places, exposing them to smoke, scorching sun, wind, rain, and dew, so that dust, dirt, dung, filth, sparrows, and mice have ruined them; dwelling and lodging with them, we have never shown reverence. Or we have left the bodies of the statues naked, never adorning them, or have concealed lamps and candles and shut up temple halls, obstructing the Buddha's light. Sins such as these are measureless and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, we confess them and perform kṣamā.

24.12

"Furthermore, we disciples, from anādikāla until today, have handled scripture scrolls with impure hands; or facing sacred scriptures, we have spoken worldly and unrighteous talk; or placing them at the heads of beds, we have sat and stood without respect; or shutting them up in chests, we have let them be worm-eaten and rot; or their scrolls have come loose and their fascicle sets have lost their order; or parts have been skipped, missing, or erroneous, and the paper and ink have torn, yet we ourselves have not repaired them and refused to circulate them. Sins such as these are measureless and boundless; today we confess them, take refuge, and perform kṣamā.

24.13

"Or sleeping on the ground we have listened to the scriptures, or lying on our backs we have read and recited them; with loud voices and laughter we have disrupted others from hearing the Dharma; or misinterpreting the Buddha's words, we have errantly explained the meaning to listeners; we have explained as Dharma what is not Dharma, and as not Dharma what is Dharma; explained as an offense what is not an offense, and as not an offense what is an offense; explained light offenses as heavy, and heavy offenses as light. Or we have copied what was before and put it after, copied what was after and put it before, put before and after into the middle, and put the middle into before and after, embellishing literary phrases and inserting them into our own texts. Or for the sake of material gain, fame, and reverence, we have preached the Dharma to others; devoid of a virtuous mind, we have sought the faults of Dharma masters, engaging in debate and unprincipled attacks, not seeking liberation by developing deep understanding; or we have slighted the Buddha's words and respected heterodox teachings, slandering the Mahāyāna and praising the path of the śrāvakas. Sins such as these are measureless and boundless; today, with a sincere mind, we confess them and perform kṣamā.

24.14

"Furthermore, we disciples, from anādikāla until today, have created obstructions regarding the Saṅgha: killing arhats, causing schism in the harmonious Saṅgha, harming people who have aroused the aspiration for anuttarasamyaksambodhi, and severing the Buddha seed so that the Path cannot proceed. Or we have forced monks to return to lay life, flogged śramaṇas, driven them with whips, and subjected them to painful words and slander; or we have broken the precepts, broken the fast, and broken the deportment; or we have encouraged others to abandon the pure life of celibacy and indulge in the five desires; or falsely assuming the outward appearance [of a monk], we have secretly dwelt as thieves. Sins such as these are measureless and boundless; today, with shame and remorse, with sincere minds, we perform kṣamā.

24.15

"We disciples, from anādikāla until today, have stood naked or in solitary garments before scriptures and statues; with impure feet and shoes we have arrogantly mounted halls and stūpas; or wearing wooden clogs we have entered saṅghārāmas; spitting in halls and rooms, we have defiled the grounds of the Buddha and the Saṅgha; or lodging together with monks, we have soiled their Dharma robes; riding in carriages and spurring horses, we have barged through monasteries. Transgressions and obstructions such as these committed against the triratna are measureless and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the noble assembly, we take refuge and perform kṣamā.

24.16

"May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated from performing this kṣamā for all sins and obstructions against the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, be reborn life after life always encountering the triratna, revering and honoring it without satiety, using heavenly silk, wondrous fabrics, jeweled interwoven canopies, hundreds of thousands of musical entertainments, and rare, extraordinary flowers and incenses not found in the world to make constant offerings. If [the Buddhas] have not yet attained buddhahood, may we go beforehand to entreat them to open the gate of nectar; if they are to enter nirvāṇa, may we always obtain the privilege of presenting the final offering; among the Saṅgha of monks, may we cultivate the six harmonies and reverences, obtain the power of mastery to cause the triratna to flourish, propagating the Buddha-path above and converting sentient beings below."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra of Baoda's Inquiries on the Retribution of Śramaṇas

24.18

Baoda shortly afterward went forward and entered another hell: the Hell of Plowing Fields. Why is it called the Hell of Plowing Fields? That hell is twenty yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed by iron walls with fierce, relentless blazes; the fire above penetrates below, and the fire below penetrates above, its flames blazing furiously and the smoke and fire burning brightly. At that time, iron knives sprouted from the ground in the hell, their blades pointing upward, fire burning upon the blades to scorch the sinners. The sinners, bewildered and flustered, their spirits fleeing, their souls terrified and tormented in the darkness without awareness, suffered a thousand varieties of sins and myriad billions of agonies. In that hell there were iron oxen plowing the earth, flames erupting on all sides.

24.19

In the eastern gate there were six thousand sinners, fire blazing from their mouths and eyes, smoke and flames bursting forth together, fire flowing like water over their bodies, hands, and six sense organs. When the sinner-śramaṇas refused to step forward, horse-headed rākṣasas held iron forks in their hands, striking at their backs until they pierced out through their chests, and holding iron hooks in their hands, they hooked into their bones, dragging them forward step by step. Among them, iron dogs came to lap their blood, and hungry ghosts came to devour their flesh. At that time, the sinner-śramaṇas held iron plows in their hands to plow that ground; the ground was on fire, following the flow as they went, and the lifted parts of the plows were also flowing with fire to burn the sinners. The grains and grasses sprouting from the ground all caught fire as well. In one day and one night they suffered ten thousand deaths and ten thousand births, enduring immense pain and distress, their spirits tossed about and their souls plunged into darkness. After tens of millions of kalpas they finally managed to be born as humans, but deaf, blind, mute, and despised by others, arbitrarily entangled and imprisoned by official matters, with foul sores erupting on their bodies, wandering through the wilds.

24.20

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, saying, 'What deeds did these śramaṇas perform to now suffer this agony?'

24.21

The horse-headed rākṣasa answered, saying, 'These śramaṇas received the Buddha's restrictive precepts, yet had no fear of the three evil destinies and eight difficulties. They incurred guilt and broke the precepts, lacking all goodness. Plowing fields and planting crops is called breaking the precepts; personally preparing food with their own hands and then taking it to eat themselves, and personally killing grasses and trees, they were just like non-Buddhists, caṇḍālas, and the like, devoid of shame or remorse. By these causes and conditions, they have fallen into this hell.'

24.22

Baoda wept with grief and spoke this gāthā:

24.23

"Alas! How inconceivable! How can there be such inverted views:
Having already managed to cross the great ocean, yet drowning in its deep abyss?
Having already managed to leave behind inborn blindness, yet losing sight once again?
Having already attained the unconditioned path, yet falling back into the conditioned?
Having already managed to leave behind saṃsāra, yet being burned anew by the fire of desire?"

24.24

Having spoken this gāthā, Bodhisattva Baoda departed.
