4.147

4.148
"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next I again perform repentance.
4.149
"We disciples have finished briefly repenting of the afflictive hindrances; now we must successively repent of the karmic hindrances. For karma adorns the worldly destinies in every place; therefore, reflecting on this, one seeks liberation away from the world. As the fruit and retribution of the six destinies are varied and dissimilar, with each species differing, one should know that all are made by the power of karma.
4.150
"Therefore, among the Ten Powers of the Buddha, the power of karma is extremely profound, and ordinary beings frequently give rise to doubt and perplexity regarding it. Why is this so? In the visible world, those who do good meet with hardship and adversity, while those who do evil meet with fortune and success in whatever they pursue. They then claim that there is no distinction between good and evil under heaven. Those who reckon thus all fail to deeply understand the principle of karma. Why is this so? The sūtras teach that there are three kinds of karma. What are the three? The first is karma experienced in the present life; the second is karma experienced in the next life; the third is karma experienced in subsequent lives. Karma experienced in the present life means doing good or doing evil in the present, and receiving the retribution in this very body. Karma experienced in the next life means doing good or doing evil in this life, and receiving the retribution in the next life. Karma experienced in subsequent lives means doing good or doing evil in immeasurable past lives, and receiving its retribution either in this life or in immeasurable present and future lives. That those who do evil appear to fare well in the present is because their good karma from past lives destined for the next or subsequent lives has ripened, and therefore they now enjoy this pleasurable fruit; how could it be that they obtain a good retribution by doing evil karma in the present? That those who do good appear to suffer in the present is because their evil karma from past lives destined for the next or subsequent lives has ripened, and their present power of roots of goodness is weak and unable to dispel it; therefore they receive this suffering retribution; how could it be that by doing good in the present they incur an evil retribution? How is this known to be so? In the visible world, those who do good are praised and revered by people, hence one knows that they will surely incur pleasurable fruit in the future. Since such evil karma exists from the past, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas instruct us to draw close to good friends and perform repentance together; a good friend is the complete benefit in attaining the Way. Therefore, we disciples take refuge today in the Buddha with the utmost sincerity.
4.151

4.152
"I take refuge in all such Triratnas throughout the space of the ten directions.
4.153
"We disciples, from beginningless time down to the present day, have accumulated evils like the sands of the Ganges, and committed transgressions that fill heaven and earth. Discarding bodies and receiving bodies, we were unmindful and unaware, either committing the five heinous offenses, the thick entanglements of avīci karmic offenses; or creating the karma of an icchantika who severs the roots of goodness; speaking lightly of and disparaging the Buddha's words, slandering the Vaipulya scriptures; destroying the Triratna and ruining the True Dharma; not believing in transgression and blessing, giving rise to the ten unvirtuous karmas; straying from the real and turning against the correct, doing karma of delusion and confusion; failing to be filial to our two parents, doing karma of rebellion and contrariness; slighting and disrespecting teachers and elders, doing karma of irreverence; being unfaithful to friends, doing karma of violating righteousness; or committing the four gravest, six gravest, or eight gravest offenses that obstruct the noble path; breaking the five precepts, violating the eight poṣadha precepts; frequently breaking and violating the five categories and seven aggregates [of vinaya offenses]; and committing the major and minor defiled offenses of the upāsaka precepts;
4.154
"or being unable to practice purely according to the teachings of the bodhisattva precepts, sullying celibate conduct through former and later expedients; the negligent karma of lacking the six monthly fasts, the karma of not constantly practicing the three long annual fasts; the karma of not conforming to the Dharma in the three thousand deportments, the subtle transgressions in the eighty thousand monastic rules; the karma of not cultivating the body, precepts, mind, and wisdom; the karma of committing numerous transgressions during the eight kingly days of spring and autumn; the karma of practicing the sixteen kinds of bad livelihoods; the karma of having no pity or sorrow for suffering sentient beings; the karma of having no sympathy or mindfulness, lacking compassion; the karma of neither pulling them out nor aiding them, offering no salvation or protection; the karma of harbouring jealousy and envy with no thought to cross others over; the karma of lacking equanimity toward enemies and relations; the karma of indulging in the five desires without revulsion or renunciation; or the dissipated karma arising from clothing, food, parks, groves, and ponds; or the karma of giving free rein to lust and passion during one's prime of life, committing numerous offenses; or the karma of dedicating wholesome outflows toward the three existences, obstructing world-transcending karma: karmas such as these are immeasurable and boundless. Today we disclose them before the Buddhas, the revered Dharma, and the noble Saṅgha of the ten directions, taking refuge and repenting.
4.155
"We disciples pray that, relying on the merits and virtues generated from this repentance of the offenses of the avīci hell and others, we may in life after life extinguish the offenses of the five heinous crimes, remove the delusion of the icchantikas, and from this day forward even unto the seat of awakening, we vow never again to violate these major and minor transgressions, constantly practicing world-transcending pure wholesome dharmas, strictly upholding the monastic conduct, guarding deportment as one crossing the sea cherishes a floating raft, always setting the six perfections and the four immeasurables at the head of our practice, causing the aggregates of morality, concentration, and wisdom to become increasingly bright, swiftly accomplishing the Tathāgata's thirty-two marks, the eighty minor characteristics, the Ten Powers, the fearlessnesses, the great compassion, the three foundations of mindfulness, the constant and joyful wondrous wisdom, and the eight sovereignties of the self."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra on the Inquiries of Baoda on the Retribution of Śramaṇas
4.157
Baoda again entered the Hell of Molten Copper Poured into the Mouth with Iron Pellets. Why is it named the Hell of Molten Copper Poured into the Mouth? That hell is twenty-four yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded by an iron wall and covered over by an iron net; blazing flames flare intensely, smoke and fire burn fiercely without pause, and caltrops, iron spikes, and iron spears are spread all over the ground. Fire blazes from the ground up to the net, penetrating from above to below and from below to above; smoke and fire burn fiercely, scorching and boiling the sinners. In that hell, a great iron pond pours forth, flaming pellets, smoke, and flames flare fiercely, and molten iron pellets are poured down like flowing water into the sinners' mouths.
4.158
At that time, in the southern gate there were fifty śramaṇas whose mouths and eyes spouted fire, who cried out, saying: "Why do we now suffer such torment?" They tossed and turned on the ground, unable to get up.
4.159
A horse-headed rākṣasa held a three-pronged iron fork in his hand, stamped on the ground and struck them with it. From the prongs of the fork, flames burst forth together, burning the sinners' hearts; in an instant they died, and in an instant they were revived. Furthermore, there were iron hooks that came to hook their tongues, iron clubs to strike their heads, and flying knives to flay their flesh. The horse-headed rākṣasa led the śramaṇas into a river of flowing fire; holding an iron shovel in his hand, he scooped up iron fire-pellets and poured them toward their mouths. The iron pellets entered through the mouth and exited through the back; smoke and flame flared up simultaneously from their mouths and eyes and the six faculties, the iron pellets pouring continuously without interruption.
4.160
Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa: "What kind of offenses did these sinful śramaṇas commit to suffer such torment?"
4.161
The rākṣasa answered, saying: "These śramaṇas did not uphold the Buddha's precepts and did not fear suffering retribution; greedy for gain, offerings, and fame, they felt no shame in their hearts. They violated the four gravest prohibitions yet claimed to uphold pure conduct. Having received the faithful offerings of others, they were greedy for food and drink; offerings from laypeople are heavy and extremely difficult to digest, yet they said, 'I can digest them.' They did not know the causes and conditions of the Triratna and the Four Noble Truths, and like the great ocean, they knew no contentment. By these causes and conditions, they fall into the suffering of hell for thousands of myriads of kalpas, and when reborn as humans, they are mute and unable to speak."
4.162
Bodhisattva Baoda wept upon hearing this, and spoke these words:
4.163
"Why should those destined for liberation
now suffer such torment?
Why, having crossed the ocean,
do they sink back into the vast sea?
Why, having attained great wealth and nobility,
do they return to poverty and distress?
Why, having received the pure precepts,
did they violate them without fear,
falling back onto the path of wrong views?"
4.164
Bodhisattva Baoda spoke this gāthā and departed.
