5.36

"Namas to all such immeasurable and boundless pratyekabuddhas.

5.37

"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next perform kṣamā again.

5.38

"We disciples have now performed a general kṣamā of all our karmas, and should now once again, in succession, perform specific kṣamā for each one individually. Whether general or specific, coarse or fine, light or heavy, spoken or unspoken, whatever their kinds may be, we pray that all will be eliminated. As for the specific kṣamā: first confess the three [actions] of body, then confess the four of speech, and bow down in succession before the rest of all hindrances. Regarding the three karmas of body: the first is killing and harming. As the sūtra explains, taking oneself as the comparison, one must not kill or use the rod. Although animals are different, their treasuring of life and fear of death are the same. If one investigates these sentient beings since anādikāla, they may have been our fathers, mothers, siblings, or six relations of kinship. Due to karmic causes and conditions, they transmigrate through the six destinies, coming into life and entering into death, altering their forms and changing their retributions so that they no longer recognize one another. Yet now we give rise to harm, eating their flesh and severing the seed of great compassion. For this reason, the Buddha said: 'Even if one obtains other food, one should regard it as the flesh of one's child in a time of famine—how much more so the eating of this fish and meat?' He also said: 'For profit, one kills sentient beings; with money, one acquires the meat of sentient beings. Both are evil karmas; upon death, they fall into the Raurava hell.' Thus we know that killing and harming, as well as consuming [meat], result in guilt deeper than rivers and seas, and offenses heavier than hills and mountains. Yet we disciples, from anādikāla onward, have not encountered good friends and have all committed this karma. Therefore, the sūtra says that the sin of killing and harming can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and the realm of hungry ghosts to endure suffering. If born among animals, they receive bodies such as tigers, dogs, jackals, wolves, hawks, and falcons, or receive bodies such as venomous snakes, vipers, and scorpions, constantly harboring malicious intent; or they receive bodies such as roe deer, deer, and bears, constantly harboring terror. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of retribution: first, frequent illness; second, a shortened lifespan. Since killing, harming, and consuming [meat] carry such immeasurable and diverse evil retributions, therefore we disciples today bow our heads with utter devotion and take refuge in the Buddha with the utmost sincerity.

5.39

5.40

"Namas to all the Triratna throughout the ten directions and the entirety of space."

5.41

"We disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, having had this conscious mind, have constantly harbored cruelty and malice, lacking a compassionate heart. We have committed killings out of greed, killings out of anger, ignorance, and arrogance. We have devised evil expedients, taking vows to kill, making wishes to kill, and killing through incantations. We have breached lakes and ponds, burned mountains and wilds, hunted in the fields and caught fish, or set fires with the wind, flown falcons, and unleashed hounds, afflicting and harming all sentient beings of the six destinies. Sins such as these are limitless and boundless; today, with utter sincerity, we namas and perform kṣamā.

5.42

"Or with snares, poles, bars, pikes, halberds, bows, and crossbows, we have shot birds of the air and beasts of the field; or with dip-nets, drag-nets, casting-nets, and fishing lines, we have scooped up and dredged aquatic creatures—fish, softshell turtles, giant turtles, alligators, shrimp, clams, snails, mussels, and damp-dwelling sorts—leaving those of water, land, and sky with no place to hide or flee. Or we have raised chickens, pigs, cattle, sheep, dogs, swine, geese, and ducks to supply our own kitchens or sold them for others to butcher, causing their cries of agony not yet to cease while their feathers are plucked, scales damaged, heads severed from bodies, bones and flesh minced to pieces, flayed and butchered, roasted, burned, boiled, and broiled—imposing severe torment, bitter pain, and perverse cruelty upon the innocent. Merely to indulge a fleeting delight of the palate, the flavor obtained is exceedingly little, not exceeding three inches across the tongue, yet its karmic retribution and calamitous consequences endure for eternal kalpas. Sins such as these, today with utmost sincerity, we namas and perform kṣamā.

5.43

"Furthermore, from anādikāla down to the present day, we have raised armies to attack one another, contending on borders and battlefields, with two battle lines facing each other, mutually slaughtering; or we have killed ourselves, instructed others to kill, or rejoiced at hearing of killing; or practiced butchery and mincing, acted as executioners for hire, boiling and slaughtering the lives of others, acting without forbearance; or indulged our wrath, brandishing spears and wielding blades, beheading, stabbing, pushing [others] into pits and trenches, drowning them with water, blocking burrows and destroying nests, crushing and pounding them with earth and stones, or trampling and crushing all living beings under chariots and horses. Sins such as these are limitless and boundless; today we confess them, namas, and perform kṣamā.

5.44

"Furthermore, from anādikāla onward, we have irrigated dry fields, aborted fetuses, dropped offspring, broken eggs, and ruined nests; harmed and killed sentient beings with poison and sorcery; tilled soil and dug the earth, planted fields and gardens, raised silkworms and boiled cocoons, kept cats to catch mice—causing severe harm and killing; or swatted and struck mosquitoes, gadflies, flies, bees, and scorpions; pinched and crushed fleas and lice; or burned away refuse and cleared gutters, wrongfully harming all; or in consuming fruits or using grains, or in water or vegetables, improperly killed sentient beings; or kindled firewood or exposed lamps and candles, burning various types of insects; or consumed sauces and vinegar without checking for movement; or poured out boiling water, scalding insects and ants to death. In this way, even in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—throughout the four deportments—we have constantly injured and killed subtle living beings flying in the air and clinging to the ground. As disciples, because of ordinary beings' clouded consciousness, we were oblivious and unaware; today we confess them, namas, and perform kṣamā.

5.45

"Furthermore, we disciples, from anādikāla down to the present day, have used whips, canes, cangues, locks, stocks, and fetters, pressing, forcing to stand, interrogating with torture, beating, hurling, kicking and trampling with hands and feet, tying and binding, caging and penning, and cutting off water and grain—in such various evil ways distressing sentient beings. Today, with utmost sincerity toward the Buddhas of the ten directions, the honored Dharma, and the noble Sangha, we namas and perform kṣamā.

5.46

"We pray that we disciples, through the merit generated by this kṣamā of sins of slaughter and harm, may in life after life attain adamantine bodies and inexhaustible lifespans, forever free from enmity and hatred, without thoughts of slaughter and harm; that toward all sentient beings we may attain the stage of regarding them as an only child; and that if we see those in peril, difficulty, or urgent distress, we will not begrudge bodily life to employ expedients to rescue and deliver them, causing them to attain liberation, and thereafter preach for them the subtle, wondrous true Dharma, so that all sentient beings who see our forms or view our shadows will receive peace and joy, and upon hearing our names and listening to our voices, their fears will all be eliminated."

5.47

Mahāyāna Sūtra of Baoda's Questions and Answers on the Karmic Retributions of Śramaṇas

5.48

Shortly thereafter, Baoda entered further into the Hell of Flowing Fire. Why is it named the Hell of Flowing Fire? That hell is two hundred yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded on all sides by an iron wall, covered above with iron netting, with raging fires blazing intensely, and smoke and flames brightly piercing. Caltrops and iron spikes are spread all over the ground; within the hell, streams of fire, smoke, and flames rise together.

5.49

At the western gate, there are six hundred sinners wailing and crying aloud, their entire bodies ablaze with fiercely raging flames. These sinful śramaṇas cry out, saying: 'For what sins of ours have we come into this place?' Leaping and writhing, they are unwilling to advance.

5.50

A horse-headed rākṣasa slaps his ears with his hands, fire issuing from his mouth and eyes; holding a sharp blade in his hand, he chops toward their heads. There are also hungry dogs that come to eat their flesh, hungry ghosts that come to drink their blood, and flying birds that come to feed on their marrow. The horse-headed rākṣasa seizes their arms and drags them; fire blazes beneath his hands, and immediately they are scorched. Streams of fire pour over their bodies, thoroughly scorching and rotting them. In a single day and a single night, they suffer limitless punishment, dying a thousand deaths and living a thousand lives, dying ten thousand deaths and living ten thousand lives.

5.51

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, saying: 'By what causes and conditions do these śramaṇas suffer such retribution?'

5.52

The horse-headed rākṣasa answered Baoda, saying: 'These śramaṇas received the Buddha's pure precepts but did not maintain them purely. They received people's faithful offerings of tooth-sticks to rinse their mouths and fragrant decoctions to bathe, wandered through the world bearing the patra to beg for food, outwardly resembling the form of a śramaṇa while inwardly feeling no shame. Due to these causes and conditions, they fall into this hell.'

5.53

When Baoda heard this, he wept sorrowfully with falling tears, and then spoke a gāthā, saying:

5.54

"How could one without bonds / Return into prison?
How could one who emerged from birth-and-death / Return into the three evil destinies?
How could one encounter the floating log / Yet, having seen light, return to darkness?
How could the blown-out fire / Suddenly blaze up again?
Persons of pure practice and liberation / Now suffer great bitter pain."

5.55

Baoda Bodhisattva spoke this gāthā and departed.
