6.18
"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next I perform kṣamā again:
6.19
"We, disciples, next repent the karmic actions of robbery and theft. The sūtra states: 'If an object belongs to another and is guarded by another, among such things, not even a single blade of grass or a single leaf should be taken if not given, how much less should it be stolen? Yet sentient beings see only immediate benefit, taking things through diverse illicit means, which brings upon them this calamity in the future.' For this reason the sūtra states: 'The crime of robbery and theft can cause sentient beings to fall into hells and hungry ghosts to suffer. If born among animals, they receive forms such as oxen, horses, donkeys, mules, and camels, repaying former debts with all their physical strength, flesh, and blood. If born among humans, they become servants and slaves to others, with clothes unable to cover their bodies and food insufficient to sustain life, enduring extreme poverty and misery, with their human decencies nearly exhausted.' Since robbery and theft incur such painful retribution, for this reason, we disciples, today with utmost sincerity bow our heads and take refuge in the Buddha:
6.20
"Namo Buddha Destroying All Kleśas of the eastern direction; namo Buddha Wondrous Sound Sovereign of the southern direction; namo Buddha Great Cloud Light of the western direction; namo Buddha Cloud Sovereign King of the northern direction; namo Buddha Conditionless Adornment of the southeastern direction; namo Buddha Transcending All Māra Realms of the southwestern direction; namo Buddha Seeing Without Fear of the northwestern direction; namo Buddha Adorned with All Virtues of the northeastern direction; namo Buddha Lotus-Treasury Light of the zenith; namo Buddha Wondrous Good Abiding King of the nadir.
6.21
"I take refuge in these and all other members of the Triratna throughout all of empty space in the ten directions.
6.22
"From anādikāla until today, we disciples have either stolen the wealth and jewels of others or raised weapons to forcibly seize them; or, relying on personal physical strength, coerced and taken them; or, relying on official authority or taking advantage of power, used tall cangues and heavy shackles to unjustly oppress the good and upright, accepting illicit goods and torturing the upright to make them crooked. Because of these causes and conditions, they were entrapped in the web of the law; or we held corrupt offices and took possession of others' wealth, encroaching on public goods to enrich private ones, or encroaching on private goods to enrich public ones; damaging that to benefit this, or benefiting that to damage this; cutting off others to enrich ourselves, giving by mouth while stingy in mind; or we covertly defaulted on rents and values, evaded customs and tolls, concealed official levies and taxes, or hid and embezzled them. Measureless and boundless are such crimes as these; today with shame and remorse we take refuge and perform kṣamā.
6.23
"Or we took without being given the belongings of the Buddha, the Dharma, or the Saṅgha; or objects for sūtras and images, or objects for repairing stupas and monasteries, or objects for offerings to the permanent Saṅgha, or objects intended for the visiting Saṅgha; or we stole and misapplied them, relying on power and not returning them; or we borrowed them ourselves or lent them to others, or exchanged, loaned, leaked, and wasted them; or we mixed and confused the belongings of the Triratna in use; or we took the goods of the monastic assembly—grains, rice, firewood, ginger, fermented beans, sauce, vinegar, vegetables, fruits, cash, textiles, bamboo, timber, patterned silks, banners, canopies, incense, flowers, oil, and candles—and used them according to our whims and wishes; or we pledged to give things to the Triratna but deceptively failed to give them; or we used them ourselves or gave them to others; or we plucked the Buddha's flowers and fruits, or used the garlands of the Saṅgha, using the Triratna's property to privately benefit ourselves. Measureless and boundless are such crimes as these; today with shame and remorse we reveal and perform kṣamā for them.
6.24
"Furthermore, from anādikāla until today, we disciples, towards acquaintances, friends, teachers, monks, fellow students, parents, brothers, and all six kinds of relatives and family members, while living and dwelling together, have deceived one another over every single need; or towards neighbors and adjacent households, we shifted fences and extended walls, seizing land and residences, altering markers and changing boundary signs; we plundered fields and orchards, using public affairs as a pretext for private gain, seizing others' inns and shops, as well as farmlands and estates. Measureless and boundless are such crimes as these; today we reveal them, take refuge, and perform kṣamā.
6.25
"Furthermore, from anādikāla until today, we disciples have attacked cities, destroyed towns, burned villages, broken palisades, stolen and sold free people, or lured away others' slaves and maidservants; or we unjustly oppressed innocent persons, causing their bodies to be wounded with bloody blades, their bodies put in penal chains, their family estates ruined and dispersed, their flesh and blood separated while alive, dispersed across different cities, severed in life and death. Measureless and boundless are such crimes as these; today with shame and remorse we reveal and perform kṣamā for them.
6.26
"Furthermore, from anādikāla until today, we disciples, in traveling with merchants, bartering goods, and trading in shops and marketplaces, have used light steelyards, small peck-measures, short measures of inches and feet, stealing fractions and ounces, cheating over pinches and grains, exchanging coarse for fine, swapping short for long, using hundreds of deceitful ploys to seek the slightest profit. Measureless and boundless are such crimes as these; today with shame and remorse we take refuge and perform kṣamā.
6.27
"Furthermore, from anādikāla until today, we disciples have bored through walls, blocked roads to plunder, defaulted on debts and interest, failed to pay debts and breached agreements, deceiving to people's faces with mind and mouth; or unlawfully usurped the belongings of spirits, beasts, and the four modes of birth; or relied on divination and physiognomy to take people's wealth and jewels; and so forth, seeking gain with gain, maliciously seeking, excessively seeking, without satiety or sufficiency. Measureless, boundless, and unspeakable are such crimes as these; today with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the noble assembly, we take refuge and perform kṣamā.
6.28
"May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated from this kṣamā for the crimes of robbery and theft, in life after life obtain the cintāmaṇi, constantly raining down the seven precious treasures, superior wondrous garments, the hundred flavors of ambrosia, and various decoctions and medicines, such that whatever is needed arrives in accordance with a single thought. May all sentient beings have no sign of stealing or plundering; may all be able to have few desires and know contentment, not indulge and not become defiled; may they constantly delight in giving, practicing urgent relief on the Path, giving up head, eyes, marrow, and brain as if casting away spittle, dedicating this to the fulfillment of dānapāramitā."
6.29
Mahāyāna Sūtra of Lotus Baoda's Questions and Answers on the Karmic Retributions of Śramaṇas
6.30
Baoda walked a short distance forward and entered the Iron Bed Hell again. Why is it called the Iron Bed Hell? This hell is fifty yojanas in length and breadth. It is surrounded by an iron wall, with an iron net covering it above. Raging fire blazes fiercely throughout the hell, and caltrops and iron spikes are spread all over the ground. Smoke and fire burn intensely, blazing simultaneously in the four directions. Within it there is an iron bed, on which are fixed sickle-blades as sharp as sword-points. Fire shoots forth from them, with blazing flames roaring together.
6.31
At the eastern gate, there were seven hundred śramaṇas pointing their hands and calling to heaven, shouting: 'Alas, what misery! For what crime have we now arrived here?' They leaped, rolled on the ground, and screamed at the top of their voices.
6.32
A horse-headed rākṣasa, holding a three-pronged iron fork in hand, struck toward their waists so that it penetrated through their navels, lifted them up, and placed them on the iron bed. The sickle-blades pierced upward, penetrating through belly and back. They died a thousand deaths and were born a thousand times, died ten thousand deaths and were born ten thousand times, receiving measureless punishment in a single day and night. When reborn from this hell into the human realm, their faculties would be incomplete.
6.33
Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa: 'What karmic deeds did these śramaṇas commit to suffer such punishment?'
6.34
The horse-headed rākṣasa answered: 'These śramaṇas received the Buddha's pure precepts, but did not seek the future unexcelled Buddha path; they sought only present fame, praise, profit, and support, violating in body the four prohibitions and the eighty thousand deportments. They craved the offerings of the faithful like fire catching dry grass, without knowing satisfaction; they sat on people's couches and seats contrary to the Dharma; they stayed overnight with laypeople like worldly people; they sat on the Buddha's bed, climbed and trod upon their masters' seats, and slept in the cool shade beneath the statues of their masters. Due to these causes and conditions, they fell into this hell.'
6.35
Baoda wept in grief upon hearing this, and said:
6.36
"How wondrous! How strange and rare! / That having liberation, one is not liberated?
How wondrous! How strange and rare! / The sun of wisdom plunges into the great sea;
Having already obtained the gate of liberation, / One is bound once again."
