Pay namas to all such immeasurable and boundless pratyekabuddhas.
8.10
Having paid homage to the triratna, next perform kṣamā again.
8.11
We, disciples and the rest, having already made mutual kṣamā for the three bodily karmas, should now in sequence perform kṣamā for the four evil karmas of speech. In the sūtras it is said: “The sins of speech karma can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and hungry ghosts to suffer pain. If among animals, they take the forms of owls, eagle-owls, and vultures, and whoever hears their cries detests them without exception. If born among humans, their breath is always foul, no one believes or accepts whatever they say, and their family members are discordant and constantly fond of quarreling and dispute.” Since speech karma has such evil fruits, for this reason, we disciples today take refuge in the Buddha with utmost sincerity:
8.12
Namo Sumerupradīparāja Buddha of the eastern direction; Namo Mahāpuṇya Buddha of the southern direction; Namo Anantavīrya Buddha of the western direction; Namo Bodhipuṣpotpannapuṇya Buddha of the northern direction; Namo Sarvabodhipuṣpa Buddha of the southeastern direction; Namo Anantapratibhāna Buddha of the southwestern direction; Namo Padmotpādarāja Buddha of the northwestern direction; Namo Sarvaśokapraśamana Buddha of the northeastern direction; Namo Paramaraśmirāja Buddha of the nadir; Namo Vidyutpradīparājadhvaja Buddha of the zenith.
8.13
Pay namas to all the triratna throughout the realms of empty space in the ten directions, such as these.
8.14
We, disciples and the rest, from anādikāla down to the present day, have engaged in false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, and frivolous speech; asserted existence where there was emptiness, and declared emptiness where there was existence; claiming to have seen what was not seen, and claiming not to have seen what was seen; claiming to have heard what was not heard, and claiming not to have heard what was heard; claiming to know what was not known, and claiming not to know what was known; deceiving the worthy and deluding the noble, our words and deeds being in conflict. We have praised ourselves for attaining superhuman qualities: ‘I have attained the four dhyānas, the four formless attainments, the sixteen aspects of ānāpānasmṛti contemplation; I have attained srotāpanna up to arhat; I have attained pratyekabuddha and non-retrogressing bodhisattva; devas come, nāgas come, bhūtas come, and spirits come; whirlwind and earth spirits all come to my dwelling; when they ask, I answer,’ displaying wonders to delude the masses and seeking worldly fame and profit. Sins such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today we confess, pay namas, and perform kṣamā.
8.15
Furthermore, we, disciples and the rest, from anādikāla down to the present day, have made slanderous remarks to incite discord and fan the flames between both sides; with divisive speech and fabricated slander, dealing in loose tongues, we spoke of this side to that side, and spoke of that side to this side; separating others from their families, breaking up others' marriages and kinships, exhausting our tongues in pointing out people's shortcomings, ruining people's good friends, making intimate ones estranged, and causing longtime intimates to become enemies. Or with frivolous and untrue speech, speaking words not tending toward righteousness, we slandered rulers and fathers, disparaged teachers and elders, destroyed the loyal and good, eclipsed those superior to ourselves, carried tales between two states to stir both sides up, were showy, hollow, and deceptive, always making false statements, saying one thing and thinking another in countless ways, praising to people’s faces while blaming and reviling behind their backs, reciting heretical texts, and transmitting heretical, evil teachings. Or with harsh speech we scolded and reviled, using coarse and rough words; or we called upon heaven and pointed to earth, invoking ghosts and spirits. The sins generated by speech karma such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the noble Saṅgha, we pay namas and perform kṣamā.
8.16
May we disciples and the rest, by virtue of the merit generated by this kṣamā of sins of speech karma and the like, in lifetime after lifetime be endowed with the eight tones of voice and the four unobstructed dexterities in discourse; may we always speak words of harmony and benefit, with a tone that is pure and elegant, delighting all who hear it; may we be skilled at understanding the regional dialects of sentient beings. When we speak, may it be at the right time and with appropriate limits, causing listeners to achieve liberation and awakening, to transcend the ordinary, enter the noble, and open the eye of wisdom.”
8.17
Mahāyāna Lotus Baoda's Questions and Answers on the Karmic Retributions of Śramaṇas Sūtra:
8.18
A short while ago, Baoda entered a Tongue-Pulling Hell. Why is it called the Tongue-Pulling Hell? That hell is fifty yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed all around by iron walls and covered above with an iron net. At the gate is a bronze hound ten yojanas in size, with fire shooting from its mouth and eyes. In that hell, knife blades naturally sharp as needle-points burn with blazing, fiercely bright fire. At the four corners of the iron wall are large venomous serpents with their mouths opened wide, fire shooting from their mouths and eyes to burn the sinners, and warden-yakṣas hold large iron plows to plow the sinners' tongues.
8.19
At that time, inside the northern gate were five hundred sinners. Seeing the hell from afar, their souls departed and their gallbladders shattered; writhing on the ground, they refused to proceed, each saying: “For what sin of ours are we entering this place now?”
8.20
Horse-headed rākṣasas held iron clubs in their hands and struck at their heads, crushing their bodies to dust. Then hungry ghosts came to devour their flesh, and hungry dogs came to gnaw their bones; when a reviving wind blew upon them, they instantly came back to life. Horse-headed rākṣasas held iron hooks in their hands, hooking into their backs and bringing them out through their chests; wherever the hooks struck, fire immediately flared around the hooks, burning right through from left to right, their bodies and minds completely rotting away.
8.21
Warden-yakṣas pulled out the sinners' tongues; the tongues stretched out broad and long, spreading all across the hell, and iron plows plowed them. Wherever the plows entered, blood poured like a torrential rain, and fire flared up following the blood; knife blades within pierced the sinners from below. Thus they suffered myriad kinds of agony. Furthermore, iron axes chopped the sinners' tongues, shattering them inch by inch and piling them into mountains of flesh. In a single day and night they suffered immeasurable punishments, dying ten thousand times and being reborn ten thousand times, dying a thousand times and being reborn a thousand times.
8.22
Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa: “What karma did these sinners perform to undergo suffering like this?”
8.23
The horse-headed rākṣasa replied: “These sinners received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not uphold and protect them. With divisive speech and evil cursing, they slandered others, insulted and humiliated the good, spread falsehood as truth, and practiced all manner of curses. Due to these causes and conditions, they have fallen into this hell, with no time of release for thousands of myriads of kalpas. If they should later get out, they will always become animals—owls and horned owls—whose sounds no one likes to hear. If born among humans, for hundreds and thousands of lifetimes they will be deaf, blind, mute, and dumb, their breath constantly foul, and they will be detested by others.”
8.24
Bodhisattva Baoda wept in sorrow upon hearing this, and spoke a gāthā:
8.25
“How sorrowful! Immeasurably so, to enter the path of wrong views.
Having reached the other shore, how could one drown again in the great ocean?
Having understood birth and death, how could one turn back to the delusion of ignorance?
Having attained liberation, how could one be ensnared again by evil?
How could a person who has renounced the world utter wrongful and improper speech?”
8.26
Bodhisattva Baoda spoke the gāthā and departed.
