9.1

“If there are kulaputras or kuladuhitṛs who can uphold, read, and recite the names of these thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa, they are certain to see Maitreya, the Bhagavat, and to see Ruci, and will be far removed from all difficulties.

9.10

"Take refuge in all such immeasurable and boundless pratyekabuddhas.

9.11

"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next repent again:

9.12

"We disciples have already finished repenting the three bodily and four verbal [misdeeds]. Next we repent all obstacles with regard to the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha. Therefore, the sūtras say that a human body is difficult to obtain, the Buddha's Dharma is difficult to hear, the assembly of monks is difficult to meet, faithful devotion is difficult to generate, the six sense faculties are difficult to possess in full, good spiritual friends are difficult to find, and a mind of dread [toward saṃsāra] is difficult to arouse. Yet now, together, through our good roots planted in past lives, we have obtained this human body with the six faculties complete, have also met good spiritual friends, and have been able to hear the true Dharma; but meanwhile, each of us has been unable to exert utmost heart and diligence. We fear that in the future we will long drown in myriad sufferings with no time of release. Therefore, on this day, we must with utmost sincerity and shame touch our foreheads to the ground and take refuge in the Buddha:

9.13

"Namo Manyue Guangming Buddha of the eastern direction, namo Zizaiwang Buddha of the southern direction, namo Wubianguang Buddha of the western direction, namo Jingangwang Buddha of the northern direction, namo Shiziyin Buddha of the southeastern direction, namo Xiangxiang Youxi Buddha of the southwestern direction, namo Xumixiang Buddha of the northwestern direction, namo Baozuigaode Buddha of the northeastern direction, namo Baoyoubohua Buddha of the nadir, namo Guangzhongde Buddha of the zenith.

9.14

"Take refuge in all the Triratna throughout empty space and the worlds of the ten directions.

9.15

"We disciples, from time without beginning down to the present day, have constantly had our minds shrouded by ignorance and our obstacles of affliction heavy. When seeing images of the Buddha, we have been unable to revere them with our utmost heart; we have shown contempt to the Saṅgha, been cruel to good spiritual friends, destroyed stupas and ruined monasteries, burnt images, shed the Buddha's blood, or resided ourselves in splendid halls while placing honored images in lowly and vile places, letting them be smoked by soot, exposed to the sun, blown by the wind, soaked by rain and dew, soiled by dust and dung, damaged by sparrows and mice; living together and lodging together without ever offering reverence, or leaving image bodies naked and never adorning them, or shielding lamps and candles, or opening and closing hall doors so as to block the Buddha's radiance. Such offenses are immeasurable and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, we disclose and repent them.

9.16

"Furthermore, we disciples, from time without beginning down to the present day, have perhaps regarding the Dharma grasped scripture scrolls with unclean hands; or while before scriptures and books engaged in improper worldly chatter; or placed them at the head of the bed, sitting and rising without respect; or opened and closed chests and baskets letting worms eat and rot them; or the scrolls detached and the sections lost their order; or words were missed, omitted, or mistaken, and paper and ink torn, yet we did not repair them ourselves and were unwilling to circulate them. Such offenses are immeasurable and boundless; today we disclose them, take refuge, and repent.

9.17

"Or we lay on the ground listening to the scriptures, or lay on our backs reading and reciting; or laughed and spoke loudly, disturbing others from hearing the Dharma; or misconstrued the Buddha's words, explaining according to our own perverse understanding; or explained what is non-Dharma as Dharma, and Dharma as non-Dharma; or explained what is not an offense as an offense, and an offense as not an offense; or explained light offenses as heavy, and heavy offenses as light. Or we copied what was before and put it behind, or copied what was behind and put it before, or placed the front and back in the middle, or placed the middle in front and back; or ornamented words and inserted them into our own texts; or preached the Dharma to people for the sake of material gain, reputation, and veneration; or without a mind of virtue and way sought faults in Dharma teachers, engaging in debates to criticize them unreasonably. Not seeking supermundane Dharma for the sake of profound understanding, or scorning the Buddha's words while honoring deviant teachings, slandering the Mahāyāna and praising the śrāvaka way. Such offenses are immeasurable and boundless; today with utmost heart we disclose and repent them.

9.18

"Furthermore, we disciples, from time without beginning down to the present day, have perhaps regarding the Saṅgha had obstacles: killing arhats, breaking the harmonious Saṅgha, harming those who generated the unexcelled bodhicitta, severing the Buddha's lineage so that the Way could not flourish. Or we forced monks to return to lay life, whipped and beat śramaṇas, flogged and enslaved them, and heaped harsh words and slanders upon them; or broke the precepts, broke the fast, or broke the deportment; or urged others to abandon the pure conduct and practice the five desires; or feigned the religious deportment to stealthily dwell as thieves [in the order]. Such offenses are immeasurable and boundless; today with shame and utmost heart we repent.

9.19

"We disciples, from time without beginning down to the present day, have perhaps gone naked or in solitary undergarments before scriptures and images; or stepped onto halls and stupas with unclean feet and footwear; or worn clogs and sandals into the saṅghārāma; or spat and blew our noses in halls and rooms, polluting the ground of the Buddha and the Saṅgha; or lodged together with monks and soiled their Dharma robes; or ridden in carriages and whipped horses, barging into monastic quarters. Such sinful obstacles arising with regard to the Triratna are immeasurable and boundless; today with utmost sincerity, before the Buddhas of the ten directions, the honored Dharma, and the noble assembly, we take refuge and repent.

9.20

"May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated from repenting all these sinful obstacles toward the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, in life after life constantly encounter the Triratna, honoring, admiring, and venerating them without ever growing weary; and with heavenly silks, fine brocades, jewel-intertwined canopies, hundreds of thousands of musical entertainments, and rare, extraordinary flowers and incense not found in the world, constantly make offerings. If [the Buddhas] have not yet attained buddhahood, may we first go to entreat them to open the gate of nectar; if they enter nirvāṇa, may we always be able to offer the final offering; among the Saṅgha, cultivate the six forms of harmony and respect, obtain sovereign power to make the Triratna flourish, propagating the Buddha-way above and transforming sentient beings below."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra on the Questions and Answers of Baoda on the Retribution of Śramaṇas

9.22

Baoda shortly afterward entered the Foot-Burning Hell. Why is it called the Foot-Burning Hell? That hell is seventy yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed on all sides by iron walls, iron battlements, and iron nets spread over it; raging flames blaze to burn the sinners, and there are iron spikes sharp as pointed blades to thrust at the sinners; fire blazes upon the ground without any empty space.

9.23

At the western gate there were eight thousand śramaṇas who cried out, saying: "For what sins of ours do we now come into this place?"

9.24

Horse-headed rākṣasas holding iron clubs in their hands pushed the sinners forward toward their heads, kicking them with their feet so that the iron spikes pierced them, causing them to fall at every step. In a single day and night they endured ten thousand kinds of punishment, dying and being born thousands and tens of thousands of times. When emerging from the hell, if born among humans, their bodies would be incomplete.

9.25

Hearing this, Baoda wept sorrowfully and said: "What karma did these people commit to come into this place?"

9.26

The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, saying: "These śramaṇas received the Buddha's pure precepts but did not keep them purely; with unclean feet they walked upon the grounds of the Buddha and the Saṅgha; or they rode donkeys and horses, wandering past the doors and gates of Buddha images, with no shame in their hearts. Because of this sin, they have fallen into this hell."

9.27

Hearing this, Baoda departed weeping sorrowfully.
