> If one is a beginning practitioner, one should be instructed to extend maitrī to dear ones. How does one extend it to relatives and wish them joy? If the practitioner attains various pleasures of body and mind—obtaining clothes when cold, obtaining coolness when hot, obtaining food and drink when hungry and thirsty, obtaining wealth and honor when poor and humble, obtaining rest when worn out with traveling—the practitioner wishes that dear ones obtain such various pleasures, binding the mind to maitrī and not letting other thoughts arise; when different thoughts stray to various conditions, gather them and bring them back. If one has already practiced, one should be instructed to extend maitrī to neutral persons. How does one extend it to neutral persons and give them joy? If the practitioner attains various pleasures of body and mind, one wishes that neutral persons obtain them, binding the mind to maitrī and not letting other thoughts arise; when different thoughts stray to various conditions, gather them and bring them back. If one has long practiced, one should be instructed to extend maitrī to enemies and rivals. How does one extend it to them and give them joy? If the practitioner attains various pleasures of body and mind, one wishes that enemies and rivals obtain them, making them equal to dear ones; equally attaining one mind, the mind becomes vastly pure. Treating dear ones, neutral persons, and enemies equally, it extends broadly to the world, causing all immeasurable sentient beings to obtain joy, pervading the ten directions without exception. With a vastly pure mind, one sees the sentient beings of the ten directions just as one sees oneself; right before one's mind and eyes, one clearly sees them experiencing and attaining happiness. At that time, one immediately attains maitrī samādhi.
