> One who practices the bodhisattva path, if anger is predominant, should practice friendliness. Recollecting sentient beings of the eastern direction, the mind of friendliness is pure, free of enmity and anger, vast and immeasurable, seeing sentient beings all before his eyes. So too in the south, west, north, the four intermediate directions, above, and below. Restrain the mind to practice friendliness, not allowing external thoughts; external thoughts of disparate objects are gathered and brought back. Maintaining the mind's eye to observe, all sentient beings are clearly seen, all before his eyes. If one-pointedness of mind is attained, he should make this vow: 'With the true, pure dharma of nirvāṇa, I shall deliver sentient beings and cause them to attain true bliss.' Practicing the friendliness samādhi with a mind like this is the bodhisattva path. Abiding in the friendliness samādhi, one contemplates the true mark of dharmas as pure, indestructible, and unshakeable, and vows to cause sentient beings to attain this benefit of the Dharma. With this samādhi, one recollects with friendliness all sentient beings in the east, causing them to attain the Buddha's bliss, and so too in the ten directions! The mind does not wander or become disordered; this is called the bodhisattva's gateway of the friendliness samādhi.
