> The Buddha said: "Formerly, Cūḷapanthaka studied the scriptures for twenty-four years and grasped five words, understanding how to discard defilements and worry no more. Why? In past lives he had encountered five hundred Buddhas and had fully penetrated all the scriptures, but he hoarded the scriptures and the Way, refusing to teach others. Later, he was stricken by illness for twenty-four days, and only when facing death did he repent and call someone to teach him. Because of this single blessing, he knew five words. How much more so if one teaches people completely—the merit and virtue attained would be immeasurable! (Some editions write Zhu-li-pan-te for Cūḷapanthaka)."
