Thereupon, Samantacakṣus Bodhisattva arose from his seat in the midst of the great assembly, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, knelt on both knees with joined palms, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "O Bhagavat of Great Compassion! We pray that for the sake of the assembly of bodhisattvas in this gathering and for all sentient beings of the latter age, you will expound the bodhisattva's gradual stages of cultivation: How should they contemplate? How should they abide? What upāyas should be provided for sentient beings who have not yet awakened, so that they may all be brought to awakening? Bhagavat, if those sentient beings lack correct upāya and correct contemplation, upon hearing the Buddha Tathāgata expound this samādhi, their minds will become confused and oppressed, and they will be unable to awaken and enter into perfect enlightenment. We pray that you will give rise to compassion and provisionally explain the upāyas for us and for sentient beings of the latter age." Having spoken these words, he cast his five limbs to the ground; thus he made three requests, repeating them from beginning to end.
