> "Fault" and so forth have been explained in the Sāmaññaphala \[Sutta commentary\]. "Upright by nature" means of an upright disposition, free from bodily crookedness and so on. "I instruct" means I instruct such a person, I teach him the Dhamma. "Seven days" means seven diurnal days; the Blessed One said all this with reference to a person of dull wisdom, but an honest, guileless person of upright nature would be able to attain arahantship that very moment. Thus the Blessed One, indicating with the words beginning with "honest" that "the deceitful person is crooked and winding, and cannot be instructed even by me," threw the wanderer down, as it were, at the foot of Mount Meru, grasping him by the feet. Why? For he was excessively deceitful, of crooked mind; even when the Teacher spoke in this way, he did not place faith in the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha; he did not lend an ear to place faith; persisting in deceit, he asked the Teacher for forgiveness. Therefore the Blessed One, knowing his disposition, said the words beginning with, "Let an intelligent man come who is honest," \[meaning,\] "but I am not able to instruct a deceitful one."
