The Divine Net

3.23.2

‘atthi kho, bho, eso attā, yaṃ tvaṃ vadesi, neso natthīti vadāmi;

‘That self of which you speak does exist, I don’t deny it.

The Divine Net

3.23.3

no ca kho, bho, ayaṃ attā ettāvatā paramadiṭṭhadhammanibbānaṃ patto hoti.

But that’s not how this self attains ultimate extinguishment in this life.

The Divine Net

3.23.4

Taṃ kissa hetu?

Why is that?

The Divine Net

3.23.5

Yadeva tattha pītigataṃ cetaso uppilāvitattaṃ, etenetaṃ oḷārikaṃ akkhāyati.

Because the rapture and emotional elation there are coarse.

The Divine Net

3.23.6

Yato kho, bho, ayaṃ attā pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati, sato ca sampajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti, yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti “upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī”ti, tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati, ettāvatā kho, bho, ayaṃ attā paramadiṭṭhadhammanibbānaṃ patto hotī’ti.

But with the fading away of rapture, this self enters and remains in the third absorption, where it meditates with equanimity, mindful and aware, experiencing for themselves the bliss of which the noble ones declare, “Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss”. That’s how this self attains ultimate extinguishment in this life.’

The Divine Net

3.23.7

Ittheke sato sattassa paramadiṭṭhadhammanibbānaṃ paññapenti.

That is how some assert ultimate extinguishment for an existing being in this life.
