21.1
Te ca sabbe abhikkante,
When they had all come forth—
21.2
sainde deve sabrahmake;
the gods with their Lord, and the divinities—
21.3
Mārasenā abhikkāmi,
Māra’s army came forth too:
21.4
passa kaṇhassa mandiyaṃ.
see the stupidity of the Dark Lord!
21.5
‘Etha gaṇhatha bandhatha,
“Come, seize them and bind them,” he said,
21.6
rāgena baddhamatthu vo;
“let them be bound by desire!
21.7
Samantā parivāretha,
Surround them on all sides,
21.8
mā vo muñcittha koci naṃ’.
don’t let any escape!”
21.9
Iti tattha mahāseno,
And so there the great general,
21.10
kaṇho senaṃ apesayi;
the Dark Lord sent forth his army.
21.11
Pāṇinā talamāhacca,
He struck the ground with his fist
21.12
saraṃ katvāna bheravaṃ.
to make a horrifying sound
21.13
Yathā pāvussako megho,
like a monsoon cloud,
21.14
thanayanto savijjuko;
thundering and flashing.
21.15
Tadā so paccudāvatti,
But then turned back,
21.16
saṅkuddho asayaṃvase.
furious, out of control.
