23.1
Ekamidāhaṃ, kassapa, samayaṃ rājagahe viharāmi gijjhakūṭe pabbate.
Kassapa, this one time I was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.
23.2
Tatra maṃ aññataro tapabrahmacārī nigrodho nāma adhijegucche pañhaṃ apucchi.
There a certain fervent celibate named Nigrodha asked me about the higher disgust of sin.
23.3
Tassāhaṃ adhijegucche pañhaṃ puṭṭho byākāsiṃ.
I answered his question.
23.4
Byākate ca pana me attamano ahosi paraṃ viya mattāyā”ti.
He was extremely happy with my answer.”
23.5
“Ko hi, bhante, bhagavato dhammaṃ sutvā na attamano assa paraṃ viya mattāya?
“Sir, who wouldn’t be extremely happy after hearing the Buddha’s teaching?
23.6
Ahampi hi, bhante, bhagavato dhammaṃ sutvā attamano paraṃ viya mattāya.
For I too am extremely happy after hearing the Buddha’s teaching!
23.7
Abhikkantaṃ, bhante, abhikkantaṃ, bhante.
Excellent, sir! Excellent!
23.8
Seyyathāpi, bhante, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṃ bhagavatā anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.
As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, so too the Buddha has made the teaching clear in many ways.
23.9
Esāhaṃ, bhante, bhagavantaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca.
I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saṅgha.
23.10
Labheyyāhaṃ, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaṃ, labheyyaṃ upasampadan”ti.
Sir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the Buddha’s presence?”
