In the second: "kinds of seeds" means seeds. "Root-seed" means sweet flag, orris root, turmeric, ginger, and so forth. "Stem-seed" means the sacred fig, banyan, and so forth. "Joint-seed" means sugarcane, bamboo, reed, and so forth. "Cutting-seed" means holy basil, sweet basil, and so forth. "Seed-seed" means early grain such as rice and barley, and late grain such as mung bean and black gram. "Intact" means unbroken. From the time it is broken, a seed is of no use as a seed. "Not rotten" means not rotten through being soaked in water; for a rotten seed is of no use as a seed. "Not spoiled by wind and heat" means not ruined by wind and the sun's heat, not reduced to saplessness; for an unviable, sapless seed is of no use as a seed. "Viable" means having retained vitality, having vitality established; for a seed devoid of vitality is of no use as a seed. "Well-kept" means well-kept, in the manner of having been stored in a granary for four months. "Earth" means the earth that provides support below. "Water" means the moisture that provides lubrication above. "Four stations of consciousness" means the four aggregates beginning with form, which are the objects of kamma-consciousness; for by being a support in the manner of an object, they are like the earth element. Delight and lust, by way of moisturizing, are like the water element. "Consciousness along with nutriment" means kamma-consciousness along with conditions; for like a seed in the earth, it grows in the earth that is the object. The second.
