35.7.3.65-67
Tatiye samiddhīti attabhāvassa samiddhatāya evaṃ laddhanāmo. Tassa kira therassa attabhāvo abhirūpo ahosi pāsādiko, ukkhittamālāpuṭo viya alaṅkatamālāgabbho viya ca sabbākārapāripūriyā samiddho. Tasmā samiddhitveva saṅkhaṃ gato. Māroti maraṇaṃ pucchati. Mārapaññattīti māroti paññatti nāmaṃ nāmadheyyaṃ. Atthi tattha māro vā mārapaññatti vāti tattha maraṇaṃ vā maraṇanti idaṃ nāmaṃ vā atthīti dasseti. Catutthaṃ uttānameva, tathā pañcamaṃ.
In the third: "Samiddhi" (samiddhi) is one who received his name because of the complete perfection of his physical body. That elder's body, it is said, was handsome, inspiring, and perfected in all manners of completeness, like a lifted garland-basket or a decorated flower chamber. Therefore he was known simply as 'Samiddhi'. "Māra" (māro): he asks about death. "The concept of Māra" (mārapaññatti): the concept, designation, or name 'Māra'. "Is there Māra, or the concept of Māra, there?" (atthi tattha māro vā mārapaññatti vā) shows: is death, or this designation 'death', present there? The fourth is clear in meaning; likewise the fifth.
