> I pressed Samanbar persistently and would by no means accept her excuses. When she saw my inclination
> to hear her circumstances exceed all bounds and found no place or room by any means to devise an excuse, she began to speak in this
> manner and said: ‘Much as I wished to keep the secret of my wounded breast concealed and not disclose the mystery of my bleeding
> heart, regard for the side of your unity prevented me from doing so, snatched the reins of self-restraint
> from my hands, and became the cause and instigator of fulfilling your desire. My tale is this, which this
> intimate companion and confidante of states of joy and grief will relate.’ And to this end she made a gesture toward her.
> She said: ‘Samanbar has related that: “My father was a king whose renown of greatness and
> glory reached the ears of elite and common folk alike, and in establishing the foundations of the kingdom and arranging the instruments of world-rule
> he became the exemplar for the monarchs of the world and leader of the masters of the earth. Great sultans wore the ring of his obedience in the ear
> of their soul, and renowned kings bore the saddle-cloth of compliance with his command upon the shoulder of their heart. He placed the bridle of subjugation upon the grey horse
> of the unruly heavens and cast the lasso of humilation around the neck of the sword-wielding sphere. One day he sat upon the throne of sovereignty in
> the courtyard of the garden, while the supporters of the world on the right and left girt their loins in service to him and
> stood in rows of service in reverent etiquette. Suddenly the chamberlains of the court brought word that a prince
> had arrived at the gate and was requesting permission to obtain the good fortune of kissing his feet. The king gave command to grant his request,
> and the royal chamberlains brought the prince inside the palace. My father deemed it necessary to show him abundant honor and respect,
> surpassed all bounds in showing him favor and benevolence, distinguished and honored him above his peers and equals with boundless rewards
> and precious robes of honor, and clothed him in the garb of the honor of intimacy. One day the king, according to the custom of the hunt, set out with a party of his intimates and select companions
> with a firm resolve toward the hunting ground, and my mother and I also went along following him. When the king returned from the hunting ground,
> he stopped at a garden for recreation and pleasure, and engaged with the prince in sipping cups of wine and listening to the melodies
> of the harp and rubab. Suddenly my two eyes fell upon the face of the prince, and at that moment
> I too became the object of his gaze. The prince’s fair countenance and graceful form stole my reason away
> and made impatience and restlessness prevail over my heart:
