title
|| Yamunāṣṭakam
1
An ocean of compassion, the daughter of the sun, the quencher of burning affliction,
beloved of Murāri, a forest fire to the fear of worldly existence, bestowing the boon of devotion,
freed from the flaming heat of the sky, radiant wealth itself for the attainment of joy day after day,
the wise person surely worships forever the Yamunā who grants eternal fruit. || 1
2
O you who wander in Madhuvana, flowing stream of the Sun, companion of the Jāhnavī, daughter of the ocean [of clouds],
adornment of Madhu’s foe, delighting Mādhava, dispelling fear in Gokula,
remover of the world’s sins, granter of heart’s desire, source and path of Keśava’s play:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
3
O sweet one, sporting in the fragrance of honey, cleaving mountains, endowed with swift velocity,
protector of your retinue, destroyer of the wicked, wearing the charm of fulfilled desires,
removing the sins amassed by the dwellers of the city of Vraja, uplifter of the universe:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
4
To the person plunged into an immense ocean of misfortune, whose mind is bewildered by hundreds of worldly afflictions,
deprived of refuge and discernment, overcome with all fears, who has approached your pair of lotus feet,
terrified by the fear of debt, weighed down by heaps of billions of unexpiated sins:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
5
O you whose body shines like ten million fresh rainclouds, adorned with terrifyingly brilliant golden ornaments,
wearing fine yellow garments that gleam, rippling like the hem of an edge flouting lightning,
adorned with gemstone ornaments and variegated woven silk, eclipsing the sun’s rays:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
6
On your auspicious sandbanks laden with the sport of the great festival of the rāsa of Yadu’s scion drunk on honey,
filling heaven and earth with ornaments resembling pearl necklaces adorning towering family-mountains,
adorned with bodices bright as the sun with tens of millions of fresh gems, wearing necklaces of stars:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
7
Whose tremulous nose-ornament pearl from a noble elephant stirs wondrously in the breeze,
whose eyes are intoxicated bees fluttering to the spotless fragrance of your lotus face,
whose spotless pair of cheeks is agitated and glistening with swaying earrings of jewel clusters:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
8
Whose lotus feet, reddened and adorned with softly tinkling anklets of gold,
move with charming steps, their mind delighted by the rhythm dhimi-dhimi-dhimi-dhimi,
remover forever of all distress from the hearts of human beings who seek refuge at your lotus feet:
victory to you, Yamunā! Victory, dispeller of fear, destroyer of distress! Purify me!
9
If a person fallen into the ocean of the burning agony of worldly existence, overtaken by misfortune,
praises daily at dawn the daughter of the sun with hands holding flower clusters, having no other refuge,
he constantly enjoys delights to his heart’s content amid the neighing of horses, and at the time of death attains Hari. || 9
