title

|| Govindāṣṭakam

1

Truth, knowledge, infinite, eternal, non-space, supreme space, / eager to crawl in the courtyard of the cow-pen, effortless, supreme effort, / possessing manifold forms fashioned by māyā, formless, having the universe as his form, / lord of the earth and Lakṣmī, lordless: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 1

2

Showing childhood fear of Yashodā's striking [him] because he ate earth, / revealing within his open mouth the row of fourteen worlds up to the Lokaloka mountain, / the root pillar of the city of the three worlds, seen by the worlds yet unseen, / lord of the world, supreme lord: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 2

3

Slayer of the heroic enemies of the gods, slayer of the burden of the earth, slayer of the disease of worldly existence, / absolute liberation, feeder on fresh butter, non-eater, consumer of the worlds, / shining through particular mental states clear with purity, unmanifest, / auspicious, utterly tranquil: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 3

4

The cowherd, the lord whose playful form is a cowherd, protector of his kin, / the cowherd cherished through the pastimes of playing with the gopīs and holding Mount Govardhana, / whose clear name ‘Govinda’ is proclaimed by the cows, bearer of many names, / far beyond the range of the senses and the mind: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 4

5

Entering into the circle of gopīs, existing in differentiated states yet appearing undifferentiated, / having beauty grey with dust raised and shaken continuously by cows' hooves, / whose bliss is grasped by faith and devotion, inconceivable, whose true being is meditated upon, / having the grandeur of a wish-fulfilling jewel: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 5

6

Taking the clothes of women busy bathing and climbing a tree, / drawing towards himself those wishing to take [them] back, who were now naked, to give [them], / by whom grief and delusion of duality are shaken off, awakened, residing within the intellect, / whose body is pure existence: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 6

7

Beloved, the cause of causes, primal, beginningless, resembling a dark rain-cloud, / dancing gracefully and intensely again and again on the heads of Kāliya in the Kālindī, / time, beyond the measures of time, comprehending everything, destroying the vices of the Kali age, / the cause of the course of the three times: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 7

8

In the land of Vṛndāvana, adorable [and] worshipped by hosts of crowds of gods, / having the bliss of the nectar of a pure, gentle smile shining like a jasmine, supremely great bliss, / the pair of whose blissful feet are worthy of worship and praised by the minds of all great sages, / an ocean of all joyful virtues: bow down to Govinda, supreme bliss! || 8

9

Whoever recites this Govindāṣṭakam with mind surrendered to Govinda, / chanting: ‘O Govinda, Acyuta, Mādhava, Viṣṇu, Lord of Gokula, Kṛṣṇa!’, / having all sins washed away by the nectar-waters of meditating on Govinda’s lotus feet, / attains that Govinda, the nectar of supreme bliss, who resides within. || 9
