> Nor is it correct that according to the Jaina doctrine the self must be admitted to have the size of the body in order to validate the cognition of "I." For if it has an intermediate size, it would have parts and therefore be non-eternal like the body and so forth, entailing the loss of \[the fruits of\] what was done and the acquisition of \[the fruits of\] what was not done. Now, if to avoid this defect it were accepted that the self is an aggregate of parts, then one must ask: does consciousness belong to each of the parts or to the aggregate? Not the first. If many conscious beings, each experiencing preeminence in competitive rivalry, lacked unanimity and acted in conflicting directions at the same time, the body too would inevitably either break apart or become motionless. Even on the second \[view\], does the state of being an aggregate depend on the extrinsic condition of the body, is it natural, or is it accidental? Not the first; for if a single part were cut off, a part of the conscious self would also be cut off, entailing that it would become unconscious. Not the second, because no invariable rule of coexistence among manifold parts is observed. Not the third, because just as union is accidental, separation would also be accidental, entailing that those living comfortably would suddenly become unconscious.
