Nor is there an absence of authority for such sentences regarding their own meaning; for authority has been established regarding an established fact, and because there is no contradiction. Nor does positing an intended meaning across multiple senses involve undue theoretical heaviness; for, since the meaning is understood by the verbal statement itself, there is no positing \[of something extra\]. Nor is there a distinction \[such that\] the stated meaning is \[one thing and\] the intended meaning \[another\]; for there is no proof of that. Where an intended meaning other than the stated meaning is understood in worldly sentences, the verbal statement there is not the direct informant. For that is an inference having the verbal statement as its mark; or it is a secondary usage due to contradiction, when the trustworthiness \[of the speaker\] is ascertained. When trustworthiness is not ascertained, it lacks authority altogether. In the case of a Vedic statement, however, without the stated meaning no other \[meaning\] is appropriate at all. But even many stated \[meanings\] are to be accepted when there is no contradiction.
