> We reply: here in the base-verse, the augment of an additional syllable is not made. Rather, the existing vowel i above the consonant c, being lengthened by the process established in the Sāmaveda, becomes the diphthong ai. Because it is a diphthong, the vowel a is the first part, and the vowel ī is the subsequent part. Both of these, being sung separately, attain transformation into āyī. And so the Sāmaveda chanters say: ‘The lengthened palatal becomes āyī.’ Such being the case, on the fourth syllable there is no palatal vowel i, so the transformation into āyī must not be made. In this subsequent verse: ‘Help us, our friend, protector of the singers,’ the vowel i above the consonant r occurring in the twelfth syllable becomes āyī as before. This transformation into āyī, because it reveals the syllable in the manner stated, must be made according to the syllables belonging to the subsequent verse. Because it is not for the sake of the melody in the order of the base-verse, the melody is not destroyed even without it.
