Just as a preparatory act such as watering is performed at the root of a tree by someone desiring fruit, and when that [act] has perished, the earth element, held together by the water element and being cooked by internal fire, brings forth the sap substance; and that sap, having become a substance, circulating through the tree and qualified by maturation, being arranged in a particular configuration, brings forth fruit such as leaves [and the rest]; thus an action such as watering is effective, and the production of fruit is not from what has perished; so by activity a trace is generated, characterized by dharma and adharma; that, having been produced, favored by other auxiliary causes, produces the fruit at another time. And this has been stated: 'Its arising is due to the continuance of the fruit of prior deeds.' //46
