Thus the defining characteristic of the intellect has been stated. The defining characteristic of the ego-maker is now stated:
25.2
abhimāno 'haṅkārastasmāddvividhaḥ pravartate sargaḥ /
aindriya ekādaśakastanmātrapañcakaścaiva //
Self-assertion is the ego-maker; from it proceeds a twofold creation:
the elevenfold group of faculties, and the fivefold group of subtle elements. //
25.3
ekādaśakaśca gaṇa ekādaśendriyāṇi tathā tanmātro gaṇaḥ pañcakaḥ pañcalakṣaṇopetaḥ śabdatanmātrasparśatanmātrarūpatanmātrarasatanmātragandhatanmātralakṣaṇopetaḥ // 24 //
The elevenfold group is the eleven sense faculties. Likewise, the subtle elemental group is fivefold, endowed with five characteristics: endowed with the characteristics of the subtle element of sound, the subtle element of touch, the subtle element of form, the subtle element of taste, and the subtle element of smell. // 24
