> "The internal instrument is threefold": this refers to intellect, egoity, and mind. This threefold \[instrument\] is designated as the internal instrument. The external is tenfold, by division into sensory faculties and action faculties. Moreover: "termed the object for the three"—for the three internal instruments, intellect, egoity, and mind, the tenfold external instrument is termed the object, meaning it is an object to be enjoyed. The meaning is that the internal triad is the master, while the tenfold external \[group\] is the servant. Moreover: "the external belongs to the present time." This external instrument, described as tenfold, belongs to the present time, grasping objects of the present. Ear, skin, eye, tongue, and nose grasp sound and the rest only in the present, not past or future. Likewise, voice, hand, foot, anus, and genitals operate only in the present upon speaking, seizing, walking, excreting waste, and sensual pleasure, not upon past or future \[ones\]. Moreover: "the internal instrument operates in the three times," the instrument consisting of mind, egoity, and intellect. Intellect cognizes a present pot and remembers a past or future one. For example: "Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīmasena existed"—intellect grasps a past object; "Kalki will be"—it grasps a future entity. Likewise, egoity also possesses the three times, as in: "I was the master in this house, and I shall be." Likewise, mind also intends the past, the present, and the future. Since this is so, it is therefore said: "the internal instrument operates in the three times."
