'This': the sixteenfold effect-creation has been stated by the pair of Āryā verses. It is called the intellectual creation. Because it is produced from the intellect (pratyaya), it is therefore called 'intellectual creation'. For it was stated earlier: 'Intellect is ascertainment' and so forth. This same intellectual creation is further divided fourfold. For he says: 'termed error, incapacity, contentment, and attainment.' Doubtful cognition is error, as in: 'Is this a post or a man?' Further, having examined the post, he cannot go near it; in this way, his incapacity has arisen. Then, a third [person] does not wish to know or to doubt that very post, thinking, 'What is this to us?'—this is contentment. Further, a fourth person, when that is seen, observes a creeper growing on the post or a bird; from that, his certainty arises: 'This is a post'—this is attainment. Thus this intellectual creation is divided fourfold, termed error, incapacity, contentment, and attainment. Of that fourfold intellectual creation, through the suppression resulting from the inequality of the constituents, there are fifty varieties. Sattva, rajas, and tamas are the three constituents; their inequality is by means of their mutual suppression. When sattva is dominant, then rajas and tamas are secondary, just as by the rising of the sun there is the secondary state of the light of the stars. In the same way, when sattva and tamas are made secondary by rajas, or sattva and rajas by tamas, then their mutual suppression occurs. By that suppression, there are fifty varieties of that fourfold intellectual creation. //
