19.1

Then Rāvaṇa, his body tormented by carrying a long-lasting burden of anger, / assembled all the Vidyādharas for the sake of war with Varuṇa.

19.2

The dwellers of the city of Kiṣkindhī, those in the excellent city of Pātāla-alaṅkāra, / and the inhabitants of Rathanēpura—all the Vidyādharas assembled.

19.3

Then a messenger was dispatched swiftly by Rāvaṇa to Hanuruha; / having arrived, he reported the command of the lord to Pratīsūrya and Pavanañjaya.

19.4

Hearing the words of the messenger, their minds resolved on the eagerness to depart, / they made preparations for the royal consecration of Hanu.

19.5

The sound of musical instruments arose, the deep booming of paṭaha and bherī drums; / the ministers stood before Hanu with water jars in hand.

19.6

They were questioned by him: "Declare, what is this undertaking?" / The ministers replied: "Your royal consecration is being performed."

19.7

He was told by Pavanañjaya: "Dear son, we have been summoned by the lord of Dānavas; / having gone to Laṅkā, we must perform the work of our master.

19.8

In the city of Rasātala, there is an adversary of his named Varuṇa, / having the strength of a hundred sons, exceedingly fierce and invincible in battle."

19.9

Hearing these words, Hanumat bowed his body in humility and spoke: / "While I am here, it is not proper for you to go to the forefront of the battle."

19.10

He was told by Pavanañjaya: "Dear son, you are a boy; in a dreadful great battle / against enraged warriors, you have not yet beheld their fierce onslaught!"

19.11

Then Śrīśaila said: "Father, what is the use of age to a coward in battle? / Even a young lion brings mighty elephants to destruction!"

19.12

Though restrained repeatedly, when he did not abandon his resolve to go, / the prince, having been granted permission by his elders, set out at once.

19.13

Bathed and having performed the religious offerings, having taken leave of all his elders, / he mounted an excellent aerial car and set out for Laṅkā with his army.

19.14

Passing the night flying over the waves of the sea, as the sun rose, / gazing upon the ocean, Hanu entered the city of Laṅkā.

19.15

His weapons held ready in hand, his body adorned with all ornaments, / Hanumat was seen by the night-stalker [Rāvaṇa] like a divine prince.

19.16

Thus Hanu, covered in jewels, accompanied by the pomp of feudal lords, / entered the assembly of the Ten-necked One [Rāvaṇa] amid celebrations with manifold flowers.

19.17

Walking with the graceful gait of a rutting elephant, the son of Pavana bowed to the king; / he too, rising with eager haste, embraced him.

19.18

Seated on an offered seat, the Ten-necked One inquired after Hanu's well-being / and paid him excellent honor, exceedingly grand, with lavish gifts.

19.19

Thus, accompanied by all his forces, the lord of Laṅkā marched out from the excellent city, / filled with enthusiasm for war, directed toward the city of Varuṇa.

19.20

Having crossed the great ocean by supernatural craft, and having reached the city belonging to Varuṇa, / the king's army arrived swiftly in full armor.

19.21

Hearing that Rāvaṇa had arrived there with all his forces, / Varuṇa, accoutered and clad in coat of mail, marched out to confront him.

19.22

The hundred sons of Varuṇa clashed in combat with the Rākṣasas, / hurling a torrent of blows with arrows, spears, swords, clubs, and other weapons.

19.23

Seeing the Rākṣasa army broken in the battlefront by the sons of Varuṇa / with merciless blows, Rāvaṇa himself rose up quickly.

19.24

Fighting on, the Ten-faced One was surrounded in battle by the sons of Varuṇa, / enveloped just as the sun is enveloped by clouds during the rainy season.

19.25

Indrajit, Vibhīṣaṇa, and heroes such as Bhānukarṇa / were all spun around by Varuṇa as if mounted on a wheel.

19.26

Seeing the Rākṣasa army disheartened, Hanumat became enraged; / discharging a hail of arrows, he stood forth accompanied by his own army.

19.27

With sword, with club, and with discus, the son of Pavana struck down the warriors, / his fierce prowess extending rapidly like Death himself.

19.28

Having fought for a long time, Hanu captured the sons of Varuṇa; / and then Rāvaṇa bound Varuṇa himself with serpent nooses.

19.29

Having captured Varuṇa along with his sons, the lord of Laṅkā was lodged in an excellent garden; / having achieved his goal, he took his seat there with his vassals.

19.30

The excellent city, stripped of its protector, was sacked by the Rākṣasa warriors, / its precious wealth plundered, full of the cries of captured prisoners.

19.31

Seeing that city being plundered on every side, the lord of Rākṣasas, / compassionate and an eminent man, quickly put a stop to it.

19.32

King Varuṇa was released; having bowed to Rāvaṇa together with his sons, / he gave his maiden daughter named Satyamati to Hanu.

19.33

When the wedding was concluded, having established Varuṇa in his own city, / the Ten-faced One, having satisfied his passion for battle, returned to Laṅkā.

19.34

Rāvaṇa also gave a maiden full of virtues to Hanu, / the daughter of Candranakhā, named Anaṅgakusumā.

19.35

Having taken her hand in marriage, Śrīśaila enjoyed an abundance of pleasures / in the city of Karṇakuṇḍala, together with her, just like a prince among gods.

19.36

Then Nala gave [him] a maiden named Harimālinī; / in Kinnarapura, Hanumat gained a hundred Kinnara maidens.

19.37

Sugrīva, the lord of the city of Kiṣkindhī, / upon seeing his daughter by Tārā, named Padmarāgā, became filled with care.

19.38

For the sake of a groom for her, portraits of Vidyādhara kings / were painted and brought; in turn the girl gazed at them.

19.39

Looking in this way, she saw Hanumat's likeness, / equal to the flower-weaponed god [Kāma]; that very [image] remained fixed in her heart.

19.40

Knowing her disposition, Sugrīva quickly summoned / the son of Pavana with an envoy, won over by great wealth.

19.41

Hanumat married that lovely-bodied maiden with gifts, honors, and riches; / having gone to the city of Śrīpura, the noble-minded one enjoyed pleasures rich in the quality of delight.

19.42

Thus Hanumat came to have one thousand excellent wives, / endowed with beauty and good qualities, their faces like the full moon.

19.43

Then Rāvaṇa too ruled his realm, the lord of the three parts [of Bharata], having conquered his foes, / an abode of glory, fame, and fortune, his footstool bowed to by Vidyādharas.

19.44

That divine Sudarśana disc, like the midday sun, / and the rod-jewel came into being, causing fear to all kings.

19.45

Thus, possessing pure intentions toward the excellent teaching of the lord of Jinas, having performed boundless merit here in human existence, / they attain a spotless body born in the realm of the gods, and supreme bliss, ever abundant.

19.46

Thus ends the nineteenth uddesaka, titled "The Description of Rāvaṇa's Reign," in the Paümacariya.
