49.1

Thereupon that Śrībhūti reached the city of Śrīpura, adorned with jewels; / entering the presence of Hanumat, he saw the messenger who caused distress.

49.2

Hanumat was seated in the assembly hall together with Anaṅgakusumā, / who was endowed with virtues and beauty, the daughter of Candraṇakhā.

49.3

Having made a bow with his head, the messenger, [standing] before the daughter of Candraṇakhā, / then clearly recounted everything to Hanumat, beginning with the Daṇḍaka forest:

49.4

'O master! Both Śambūka and Dūṣaṇa were slain by Lakṣmaṇa; / for the sake of Sītā's abduction, a great conflict has arisen here.'

49.5

Hearing this news, Anaṅgakusumā fell into a faint for a moment; / having regained consciousness, she then wept for both her brother and her father.

49.6

Seeing her thus, the entire inner apartment was shaken and wept, / just as the sound of lutes and flutes was all subdued in a moment.

49.7

'Alas, father! Alas, brother! Whither have you gone from unfortunate me? / Abandoned for a long time, why do you not grant me your sight?'

49.8

Weeping these and other [words], the daughter of Khara-Dūṣaṇa, distressed, / was brought to calm by ministers skilled in consoling.

49.9

Having performed all the rites for the deceased that ought to be done for them, the son of Pavana, / having summoned the messenger, questioned the son of King Sugrīva.

49.10

Then the messenger said there: 'O lord, listen attentively: / You already know of Sugrīva, afflicted by separation from his beloved.

49.11

His mind distressed on account of his wife, he went to Rāghava for refuge; / having gone to his own city, he fought with his enemies.

49.12

Upon seeing lord Rāma, the great vidyā Vaitālī fled; / then Sāhasa was slain in battle by Padma with arrows.'

49.13

Hearing these words, the son of Pavana said, 'Well done! Well done! / O Rāghava, you have completely rescued Sugrīva's army, plunged in calamity!'

49.14

Hearing the destruction of the grief of her father-in-law, Hanumat's wife named Kamalā / then experienced great joy accompanied by gifts and honors.

49.15

Prompted by the messenger's words, Śrīśaila set out, mounted on an excellent aerial car, / equipped with chariots, horses, and elephants, a host of warriors rising up in mass.

49.16

Then, having arrived at the city of Kiṣkindhī in due course, he descended there; / Hanumat was greeted exceedingly, with joy, by Sugrīva.

49.17

Having related Padma's deeds to him, the lord of the Vānaras, / accompanied by Māruti, arrived in the presence of Rāma.

49.18

Seeing Hanumat coming, lord Padma stood up; / highly pleased, he embraced him and spoke affectionate words.

49.19

The son of Pavana was greeted by the warriors headed by Lakṣmaṇa; / he sat down on an offered seat, and the others [sat] as well, in proper order.

49.20

Padma was seated on an auspicious throne, adorned with excellent golden earrings, / wearing a yellow garment, and Lakṣmaṇa stood beside him.

49.21

Sugrīva, Aṅga, Aṅgada, Jāmbavat, Nala, Nīla, Kumuda, and others, / along with Virādhita, stood surrounding Rāma.

49.22

Having exchanged greetings, Śrīśaila then said to Rāghava: / 'How, O master, can your boundless virtues be comprehended before you?

49.23

The excellent bow Vajrāvarta, guarded by a thousand immortals, was brought under control [by you]; / we heard of your greatness at the svayaṁvara of Vaidehī.

49.24

O you of great renown! A great deed was performed by you in your heart for us, / in that Sāhasa, who bore the form of Sugrīva, was slain in battle.

49.25

O you of great renown! For one who does not return a favor to a benefactor, / how could purity of heart truly arise within him?

49.26

A man here who is ungrateful is the most sinful of all, / shameless and devoid of pity, like hunters, trappers, and fishermen.

49.27

All of us, O noble man, are prepared to return your favor; / having gone to Laṅkā, O master, we shall pacify the lord of the Rākṣasas.'

49.28

"Master! Give the command, so that going there / I may bring your wife by the strength of my arms; behold her soon, who long for her."

49.29

Jāmbavat said: "Dear Hanumat! Well spoken by you. / You indeed must go with an attentive mind to the city of Laṅkā."

49.30

And Māruti said: "It is so, there is no doubt about this." / Then, overwhelmed with joy, Padma sent a message to Sītā:

49.31

"Speak to Sītā in my words, Hanu, distressed as she is by separation, / that in separation from her, Rāma finds no peace.

49.32

I know that in separation from me you are dying, there is no doubt about this; / even so, O beautiful one, preserve your life for the sake of spiritual tranquility (samādhi).

49.33

In the world union is hard to attain, and likewise dharma is hard to attain; / harder still to attain than that is peaceful death (samādhimaraṇa) in the doctrine of the Jina.

49.34

Therefore, O beautiful woman, do not meet your death here on the island of the Rākṣasas / until I arrive at your presence accompanied by the Vānaras.

49.35

Take this signet ring and show it to her as a token of trust, / and bring back to me the crest-jewel that is in her possession."

49.36

Saying, "Whatever you command, Master!", Māruti bowed to Rāma; / likewise to Lakṣmaṇa, and he addressed the rest of the warriors as well.

49.37

Māruti then said to Sugrīva: "Until I go there / and return, you must remain right here."

49.38

Having spoken thus, Māruti mounted an excellent celestial aerial-car / and flew up into the expanse of the sky together with his own army.

49.39

Even when a multitude of favors has been performed by another, those who make ready to return the favor— / neither the spotless moon, nor the sun, nor the king of gods is equal to them.

49.40

Thus ends the forty-ninth chapter, entitled "The Departure of Hanumat", in the Paümacariya.
