83.1

Hearing those words of the supreme sage, Bharata and other great warriors, / seized with great spiritual urgency, turned toward initiation.

83.2

Meanwhile, Bharata stood up, his cheeks radiant with earrings; / joining his hands in the form of a lotus bud, freed from delusion, he bowed to the ascetic.

83.3

Agitated with fear of saṃsāra, Bharata said then to that supreme sage: / “Lord, wandering through many thousands of wombs, I am exhausted!

83.4

Of me who am being swept away in the river of saṃsāra with its surging waves of death, / O ascetic, provide a supporting hand with the hand of initiation!”

83.5

Permitted by the guru, Bharata abandoned his ornaments there, / completely devoid of doubt, the steadfast [prince] plucked out his own hair.

83.6

Endowed with the virtues of vows, restraints, good conduct, and self-restraint, Lord Bharata was initiated; / he was known as a great sage, along with over a thousand kings.

83.7

Proclaiming “Sadhu, Sadhu!” the gods standing in the sky, / singing the praises of ascetic Bharata, released a continuous rain of flowers.

83.8

Other best of men, full of spiritual urgency, accepted the lay doctrine. / In the meantime, Kaikeyī heard that Bharata had been initiated.

83.9

She fainted, regained consciousness, and, afflicted with grief at separation from her son, / wailed pitifully with trembling shoulders, like a cow bereft of her calf.

83.10

Together with the entire inner apartment, weeping, the chief queen Kaikeyī / was then consoled with sweet words by Rāma and Keśin.

83.11

Then that noble woman, awakened, with intense spiritual urgency arisen [in her], / condemned her own body, which was revolting, foul, and ill-smelling.

83.12

Together with three hundred women, near Āryā Pṛthvīsatyā, / she took renunciation with firm resolve, and attained the supreme state of perfection.

83.13

Thus the people there, with well-purified souls, minds fixed on study of knowledge and vows, / full of great enthusiasm and capable, constantly practiced pure dharma.

83.14

Thus ends the eighty-third chapter in the Paümacariya, titled “The Initiation of Bharata and Kaikeyī”.
