23.0.829

1. Āluka, 2. Lohī, 3. Avaka, 4. Pāḍhā, and likewise 5. the Māṣaparṇī creeper:
these five are groups of ten, making fifty uddeśakas.

23.1.830

In Rājagṛha, up to: he spoke thus: "Now, Venerable Sir, those souls who pass into existence as the roots of āluka, mūlaka, śṛṅgavera, haridrā, ruru, kaṇḍarika, jāru, kṣīravirālī, kiṭṭhi, kundu, kṛṣṇakaḍambhu, madhu, payalaī, madhuśṛṅgī, niruhā, sarpasugandhā, chinnaruhā, and bījaruhā?" In this manner here too, ten uddeśakas beginning with root are to be stated similar to the bamboo group, with this difference: regarding quantity, minimally one, two, or three, [and] maximally a countable number, an innumerable number, or infinitely many take rebirth.
Depletion: "Gautama! If those infinite [souls] were depleted time-point by time-point, they would be depleted over a span of infinitely many avasarpiṇīs and utsarpinīs; yet they would not be [fully] depleted." Lifespan duration is minimally as well as maximally an antarmuhūrta; the rest is just that.

23.1.831

"Now, Venerable Sir, those souls who pass into existence as the roots of lohī, nīhū, thīhū, thibhagā, aśvakarṇī, siṃhakarṇī, siuṇḍhī, and musuṇḍhī?" In this manner here too, ten uddeśakas [are to be stated] just like the āluka group, with this difference: body size is similar to the tāla group; the rest is just that.
"It is true, Venerable Sir! It is true, Venerable Sir!"

23.1.832

"Now, Venerable Sir, those souls who pass into existence as the roots of āya, kāya, kuhanā, kandurukka, ubbehalikā, sakā, sajjā, chattā, vaṃśānikā, and kurā?" In this manner here too, ten uddeśakas beginning with root [are to be stated] completely just like the āluka group, with this difference: body size is similar to the tāla group; the rest is just that.
"It is true, Venerable Sir! It is true, Venerable Sir!"

23.1.833

"Now, Venerable Sir, those souls who pass into existence as the roots of pāṭhā, mṛgavālukī, madhurarasā, rājavallī, padmā, moḍharī, dantī, and caṇḍī?" In this manner here too, ten uddeśakas beginning with root are similar to the āluka group, with this difference: body size is as for creepers; the rest is just that.
"It is true, Venerable Sir! It is true, Venerable Sir!"

23.1.834

"Now, Venerable Sir, those souls who are reborn as the roots of māṣaparṇī, mudgaparṇī, jīvaka, mustard, kareṇukā, kākolī, kṣīrakākolī, bhaṅgī, nakhī, kṛmirāśi, bhadramustā, nāṅgalakī, prayuta, kṛṣṇā, pacula, haḍha, hareṇukā, and lohī—[do they undergo the same]?"
Thus here too ten uddeśakas without omission are similar to the āluka class. Thus here, across all five classes, fifty uddeśakas are to be expounded. Everywhere, gods are not reborn [among them]; there are three lesyās.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
