2.16.1
vyāsa uvāca:
upādhyāyaḥ pitā jyeṣṭhabhrātā caiva mahīpatiḥ /
mātulaḥ śvaśurastrātā mātāmahapitāmahau //
Vyāsa said:
The teacher, the father, the eldest brother, and the king,
the maternal uncle, the father-in-law, the protector, the maternal grandfather, the paternal grandfather,
2.16.2
bandhurjyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛvyaśca puṃsyete guravaḥ smṛtāḥ /
mātā mātāmahī caiva pitṛmātṛṣvasādayaḥ //
the eldest kinsman, and the paternal uncle—these among men are remembered as gurus.
The mother, the maternal grandmother, and the sisters of the father and mother, and so forth,
2.16.3
śvaśrūḥ pitāmahī jyeṣṭhā dhātrī ca guravaḥ striyaḥ /
ityukto guruvargo 'yaṃ mātṛtaḥ pitṛto nṛpāḥ /
anuvarttanameteṣāṃ manovākkāyakarmmabhiḥ //
the mother-in-law, the paternal grandmother, the eldest [sister], and the nurse are female gurus.
Thus has this group of gurus on the mother's and father's sides been described, O kings;
they are to be served with deeds of mind, speech, and body.
2.16.4
guruṃ dṛṣṭvā samuttiṣṭhedabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ /
naitairupaviśet sārddhaṃ vivadet nātmakāraṇāt //
Seeing a guru, one should stand up, greet him with hands folded in reverence;
one should not sit together with them, nor quarrel [with them] for one's own sake.
2.16.5
jīvitārthamapi dveṣāt gurubhirnaiva bhāṣaṇam /
udito 'pi guṇairanyai rguruddheṣī patatyadhaḥ //
Even for the sake of one's life, one must never speak out of hatred toward gurus;
even if elevated by other virtues, one who hates a guru falls low.
2.16.6
gurūṇāñcaiva sarvveṣāṃ pūjyāḥ pañca prayatnataḥ /
teṣāmādyāstrayaḥ śreṣṭhāsteṣu mātā garīyasī //
And among all gurus, five are especially to be worshipped with effort;
of them, the first three are supreme, and among those the mother is the greatest.
2.16.7
yo bhāvayati yā sūte yena vidyopadiśyate /
jyeṣṭhabhrātā ca bharttā ca pañcaite guravaḥ smṛtāḥ //
He who fosters, she who gives birth, he by whom knowledge is taught,
the eldest brother, and the husband: these five are remembered as gurus.
2.16.8
ātmanaḥ sarvvayatnena prāṇatyāgena vā punaḥ /
pūjanīyā viśeṣeṇa pañcaite bhūtimicchatā /
nāsti pitṛsamo devo nāsti mātṛsamo guruḥ //
With all one's effort, or even by giving up one's life,
these five are to be especially worshipped by one who desires prosperity;
there is no god equal to a father, there is no guru equal to a mother.
2.16.9
tayornityaṃ priyaṃ kuryyāt karmmaṇā manasā girā /
na tābhyāmananujñāto dharmmamanyaṃ samāśrayet //
One should always do what is dear to both of them by deed, mind, and speech;
without their permission, one must not resort to any other duty.
2.16.10
gururagnirdvijātīnāṃ varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇo guruḥ /
patireko guruḥ strīṇāṃ sarvvatrābhyāgato guruḥ //
Fire is the guru of the twice-born; the Brahmin is the guru of the castes;
the husband alone is the guru of women; a guest is a guru everywhere.
2.16.11
brāhmaṇaṃ praṇamed yastu viṣṇubuddhyā narottamaḥ /
āyuḥ putraśca kīrttiśca sampattistasya varddhate //
The best of men who bows to a Brahmin with the thought that he is Viṣṇu,
his lifespan, sons, fame, and wealth increase.
2.16.12
duḥśīlo 'pi dvijaḥ pūjyo na śūdro vijetendriyaḥ /
viprā hi kṣatriyātmāno nāvajñeyāḥ kadācana //
A Brahmin is to be honored even if ill-behaved, but not a Śūdra even if he has subdued his senses;
for Brahmins have the nature of Kṣatriyas, and must never be despised.
2.16.13
dharmmaśāstrarathārūḍhā vedakhaḍgadharā dvijāḥ /
krīḍārthamapi yadbrūyuḥ sa dharmmaḥ paramaḥ smṛtaḥ //
Brahmins are mounted on the chariot of the Dharmaśāstras and bear the sword of the Vedas;
whatever they might say, even in sport, is remembered as supreme dharma.
2.16.13.p1
iti vallālacarite vyāsapurāṇe guruvargakīrttanaṃ nāma ṣoḍaśo 'dhyāyaḥ /
Thus ends the sixteenth chapter in the Vyāsapurāṇa of the Vallālacarita, entitled "The Proclamation of the Group of Gurus."
2.16.13.p2
atha saptadaśo 'dhyāyaḥ
Now the seventeenth chapter.
