kasmiṃścit kāle padmākṣī vallāladayitā purā /
śaṅkaraṃ pūjituṃ tatra mahāsthānamupāgatā //
Once upon a time in former days, the lotus-eyed beloved wife of Ballāla / arrived at that great holy place to worship Śaṅkara,
2.7.2
gṛhītvā bahudravyāṇi haimāni rājatāni ca /
ātapatrañca devasya devyāśca karṇapālikām //
bringing many articles of gold and silver: / a parasol for the god, ear-ornaments for the goddess,
2.7.3
prālambikāñca kaṭakaṃ kirīṭaṃ kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam /
aṅgadaṃ kaṅkaṇaṃ sāraśanañca nūpurādikam //
a necklace, a bracelet, a diadem, a neck-ornament, / armlets, bangles, an excellent girdle, anklets, and the like,
2.7.4
vastrāṇi ca mahārhāṇi patākāśca dhvajāni ca /
yajñasūtrāṇi gandhāni nānopakaraṇāni ca //
costly garments, banners, flags, / sacred threads, perfumes, and various utensils.
2.7.5
arcayāmāsa devaṃ sā devīṃ ca sa purohitaḥ /
naivedye stairalaṅkāraicchatreṇa ca paraṃ mudā //
She and the family priest worshipped the god and the goddess / with food-offerings, with those ornaments, and with the parasol, in supreme joy.
2.7.6
pūjayitvā gatā devī sāruhya hayanaṃ varam /
purohitaḥ sthitastatra dravyāṇāmaṃśakāṅkṣayā //
Having performed the worship, the queen departed, mounting an excellent horse-drawn carriage; / but the family priest remained there, desiring a share of the articles.
2.7.7
sa mahāntam dharmmagiriṃ valadeva uvāca ha /
bhadanta dehi me bhāgam matprāpyamacireṇa bhoḥ //
He, Baladeva, spoke to the venerable Dharmagiri: / “Reverend Sir, give me my share, what is due to me, without delay!”
2.7.8
tacchratvā tadvacaḥ sthānādhipaḥ sa pratyuvāca tam /
adadāma na kasmaicit bhāgameva kadācana //
Hearing those words of his, the superintendent of the shrine replied to him:
“We have never given a share to anyone whatsoever.
2.7.9
ato na dadyāṃ bhavate gaccha gaccha gṛhaṃ vraja /
itthaṃ tābhyāmabhūttatra vākpāruṣyaṃ kiyatkṣaṇam //
Therefore, I will not give [one] to you. Go, go! Return home!”
In this manner harsh words took place between the two for a short time.
2.7.10
valadevastataḥ kraddho devaleśaṃ śaśāpa ha /
nipatadhvamare mūḍha na te bhadraṃ bhaviṣyati //
Then Valadeva, enraged, cursed the chief of temple attendants:
“Fall down, you fool! No good will come to you!”
2.7.11
śrutvā taddevaleśastvaṃ krodhamlecchānanānanaḥ /
valadevaṃ gaṇḍadeśe capeṭena vyatītaḍat //
Hearing that, the chief of temple attendants, his face like a barbarian's in fury,
struck Valadeva on the cheek with a slap.
2.7.12
ādiśat vyāyatān śiṣyān eṣopasāryyatāmiti /
tataste puruṣāścakruḥ gurorājñāprapālanam /
valadevastato 'gacchadrudannṛpatisannidhim //
He commanded his burly disciples: “Let him be removed!”
Then those men carried out the command of their guru.
Then Valadeva went, weeping, into the presence of the king.
2.7.13
ādyopāntaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ nṛpe sarvvamacīkathat /
pārṣadyā brāhmaṇāścāpi cakrustasya samarthanam //
He related everything to the king just as it happened, from beginning to end,
and the Brahmins in attendance also supported his [account].
2.7.14
valadevasya vākyasya procuśca daṇḍyatāṃ gireḥ /
evaṃ vijñāya rājāsāvapamānaṃ purodhasaḥ /
manyunā sa prajajvāla vahninā paṭalaṃ yathā //
[Confirming] Valadeva's words, they said: “The [follower of] Giri must be punished!”
Having thus learned of the insult to his domestic priest,
the king blazed up with wrath, like a thatch with fire.
2.7.15
nirvvāsyatāṃ dharmmagirī rāṣṭrānme svagaṇaiḥ saha /
iti rājā rudranāgamanvaśāt daṇḍanāyakam //
“Let Dharmagiri be banished from my realm along with his followers!”
Thus the king commanded the general Rudranāga.
2.7.16
nidhirguṇānāṃ svajanaikabandhuḥ satyaṃ vidhāturdvijavaryyavākyam /
cakāra rāṣṭrāt sa vahiṣkṛtaṃ taṃ gaṇena sārddhaṃ kila rājasiṃhaḥ //
A treasure of virtues, the sole friend of his kinsmen, [making] true the word of the foremost of Brahmins, the creator [of the sacrifice],
that lion among kings indeed drove him out from the realm along with his company.
2.7.16.p1
ityānandabhaṭṭaprokte vallālacarite devalānāṃ nirvvāsanaṃ nāma saptamo 'dhyāyaḥ /
Thus ends the seventh chapter, titled “The Banishment of the Temple Attendants,” in the Vallālacarita composed by Ānandabhaṭṭa.
2.7.16.p2
atha aṣṭamo 'dhyāyaḥ
Now begins the eighth chapter.
