27.1
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: / Kausalyā bore to Satvata sons full of vigor: / Bhajina, and Bhajamāna, and king Devāvṛdha, who was like a divine being,
27.2
and the mighty-armed Andhaka, and Vṛṣṇi, the delight of the Yadus. / Theirs are four lineages; hear them here in detail.
27.3
Bhajamāna had two Sṛñjaya wives, Bāhyakā and Upabāhyakā; / from them many sons were born to him.
27.4
Nimi, and Kramaṇa, and Viṣṇu, Śūra, and Puraṃjaya: / these were born to Bhajamāna from Bāhyakā, daughter of Sṛñjaya.
27.5
Ayutājit, Sahasrājit, Śatājit, and Dāsaka: / these were born to Bhajamāna from Upabāhyakā, daughter of Sṛñjaya.
27.6
King Devāvṛdha, a performer of sacrifices, performed vast ascetic heat, / resolved: “May I have a son endowed with all good qualities.”
27.7
Thus devoting himself and touching the water of the Parṇāśā, / as he continually bathed, the river showed her favor to him.
27.8
Overcome by thought, she reached a single firm resolve / on account of the excellence of that king, best among rivers [as she was].
27.9
She could not find that woman in whom such a son / could be born to King Devāvṛdha, endowed with all virtues. / “Therefore, alas, I myself shall become his companion in vows.”
27.10
Then, turning into a young woman possessing supreme beauty, / she chose the king, and that lord desired her.
27.10x430
In her, the noble-minded king planted a radiant embryo.
27.11
Then, in the tenth month, the best of rivers bore / a son endowed with all good qualities, Babhru, from King Devāvṛdha.
27.12
Those who know the ancient lore sing in the genealogical records, as is renowned, / praising the virtues of the high-souled Devāvṛdha:
27.13
“Just as we heard from afar in the beginning, so we have seen at close hand: / Babhru is the foremost among men, and Devāvṛdha is equal to the gods.
27.14
Sixty and six men, and seven thousands— / these attained immortality through Babhru, son of Devāvṛdha.”
27.15
He was a sacrificer, a munificent lord, wise, devoted to the brahmins, with exceedingly steadfast weapons, / renowned, of great luster, and a great car-warrior of the Sātvatas. / His lineage was very great—the Bhojas who dwell in Mṛttikāvatī.
27.16
From Andhaka, the daughter of the king of Kāśi obtained four sons: / Kukura, Bhajamāna, Śami, and Kambalabarhis.
27.17
Kukura’s son was Dhṛṣṇu, and Dhṛṣṇu’s son was likewise / Kapotaroman; then his son was Taittiri; / from him was born Punarvasu, and Abhijit from Punarvasu.
27.18
To that Abhijit, it is said, a pair of children was born: / Āhuka and Āhukī, renowned as the foremost among the famous.
27.19
And here they recite these verses concerning that Āhuka:
27.20
“With a white retinue, tall like a youthful colt, / equipped with eighty shields, Āhuka would not advance as the foremost.
27.21
No one childless, no one who gave less than a hundred [gifts], no one whose weapons were fewer than a hundred thousands, / no one of impure deeds, and no non-sacrificer could walk around that Bhoja.
27.22
In the eastern direction was the joyful shout of that Bhoja's elephants: / ten thousand chariots rumbling like clouds, / equipped with quivers, undercarriages, banners, and protective armor, / and ten thousand [elephants] with silver and gold girths.
27.23
Just as many thousands [stood] likewise in the northern direction; / adorned with tinkling bells, they attended upon their own Bhoja rulers of the earth.”
27.24
And the Andhakas gave their sister Āhukī to the princes of Avanti.
27.25
To Āhuka, by the daughter of the king of Kāśi, two sons were born: / Devaka and Ugrasena, both equal to the offspring of gods.
27.26
Devaka had four sons resembling the thirty [gods]: / Devavat, Upadeva, Sudeva, and Devarakṣita; / and there were seven daughters, whom he gave to Vasudeva:
27.27
Devakī, Śāntidevā, Sudevā, Devarakṣitā, / Vṛkadevī, Upadevī, and the seventh, Sunāmnī.
27.28
Ugrasena had nine sons; the eldest of them was Kaṃsa, / and Nyagrodha, Sunāman, Kaṅku, Śaṅku, Subhūmi, / Rāṣṭrapāla, then Sutanu, and Anādhṛṣṭi the thriving.
27.29
They had five sisters: Kaṃsā, Kaṃsavatī, / Sutanū, Rāṣṭrapālī, and the excellent woman Kaṅkā.
27.30
Thus Ugrasena, born of the Kukura line, has been described along with his offspring.
27.31
A man who remembers this lineage of the Kukuras of immeasurable splendor / obtains an extensive lineage of his own, rich in offspring.
