Having thus divided the realms in order, the Grandfather / then established guardians of the directions, O Bhārata:

in the eastern direction, he consecrated as king and guardian of the quarter / Sudhanvan, the son of the Prajāpati Vairāja;

4.12

in the southern, he consecrated the great-souled son / of the Prajāpati Kardama, named Śaṅkhapad, as king;

4.13

likewise in the western direction, he consecrated as king / the imperishable and great-souled Ketumant, the son of Rajas;

Janamejaya said: / Tell in detail the birth of Pṛthu, O Vaiśaṃpāyana, / and how this earth was milked by that great-souled one.

4.20

and how she was milked by the ancestors, by the gods, by the seers, / by the Daityas, by the Nāgas, by the Yakṣas, by the trees,

4.20x103-1

by the mountains, by the Piśācas, by the Gandharvas and the best of the twice-born,

4.20x103-2

and how the earth was milked by the Rākṣasas of great power.

4.21

Recount their specific vessels, Vaiśaṃpāyana, / and their calves and specific milks, all in proper order.

4.22

And the reason for which Vena's arm was churned of old / by the enraged great seers, dear friend, recount that reason too.

4.23

Vaiśaṃpāyana said:
Come, I shall tell you of the birth of Pṛthu, son of Vena, / [as you are] focused, restrained, and eager to listen, Janamejaya.

4.24

I would not recount it to an impure person, one of petty mind, / an unworthy disciple, one without vows, an ungrateful man, or an enemy, O king.

4.25

Securing heaven, bringing fame, giving long life, auspicious, equal to the Veda, / a secret taught by the seers: hear it, O king, as it truly is.

4.26

And whoever should constantly recount this birth of Pṛthu, son of Vena, / having bowed to the brahmins, will not grieve over deeds done or undone.
