> (3.1) Madanikā. (Into the air) Kauśāmbikā! Did you see Kāñcanamālā by the mistress's side or not? (Listening) What do you say? "Some time ago she came and went." Where now shall I look for her? (Looking ahead) Here is Kāñcanamālā coming this very way. So I shall approach her.
> Then enters Kāñcanamālā.
> (3.2) Kāñcanamālā. (Sarcastically) Well done, Vasantaka, well done! You have surpassed even the minister Yaugandharāyaṇa in this concern for peace and war.
> (3.3) Madanikā. (Approaching with a smile) Friend Kāñcanamālā! What has the noble Vasantaka done that he is praised so?
> (3.4) Kāñcanamālā. Friend Madanikā, what is the use of your asking about this? You cannot keep this secret.
> (3.5) Madanikā. I swear by the queen's feet if I reveal it before anyone!
> (3.6) Kāñcanamālā. If so, listen. Today, returning from the royal palace, I overheard at the door of the picture-gallery the noble Vasantaka's conversation with Susaṃgatā.
> (3.7) Madanikā. (Curiously) Friend, of what sort?
> (3.8) Kāñcanamālā. Thus: "Susaṃgatā, there is indeed no cause for my dear friend's illness other than Sāgarikā; so think of a remedy for this."
> (3.9) Madanikā. Then what was said by Susaṃgatā?
> (3.10) Kāñcanamālā. This was said: "Today indeed the queen, suspicious about the matter of the picture-board, when placing Sāgarikā in my hand to guard her, bestowed upon me a costume; having taken Sāgarikā dressed in the queen's attire with that very dress, I too having put on Kāñcanamālā's attire shall come here in the evening. You too must await me at the door of the picture-gallery. Then in the māhavī-creeper bower the lord's union with her will take place."
> (3.11) Madanikā. You wretched Susaṃgatā, who thus deceive the queen who is so fond of her attendants!
> (3.12) Kāñcanamālā. Friend, where are you bound now?
> (3.13) Madanikā. "You have delayed after having gone to learn of the lord's welfare whose body is indisposed"—having grown anxious with this thought, the queen has sent me.
> (3.14) Kāñcanamālā. The queen is indeed very simple-minded, who believes thus! (Walking about and looking) Here indeed the lord, disguising his condition of lovesickness on the pretext of indisposition, remains seated on the ivory-arched balcony. So come, let us report this news to the mistress.
> (Both exit.)
> Thus ends the introductory scene.
