> Then enters Susaṃgatā holding a necklace of jewels.
> (4.1) Susaṃgatā. (Piteously) Ah, dear friend Sāgarikā! Ah, modest one! Ah, affectionate to your companions! Ah, noble-natured one! Ah, of gentle countenance! Where now shall you be seen by me? (Weeps. Looking upward and sighing) Ah, accursed fate! If such uncommon beauty of form was created by you, then why has she been reduced to such an altered state? And this necklace of jewels, given into my hand by her who was despondent of life, saying: "Deliver it into the hand of some Brahmin." So let me seek out some Brahmin. (Walking about and looking) Here indeed the noble Vasantaka is coming this very way. So I shall deliver it to this very man.
> Then enters Vasantaka, delighted.
> (4.2) Vidūṣaka. Ha, ha! Today indeed Queen Vāsavadattā, appeased by my dear friend, releasing me from confinement, filled my belly with sweetmeats given with her own hand. And besides, a pair of silk garments and an ear-ornament were given. So let me see my dear friend.
> (4.3) Susaṃgatā. (Weeping and hastily approaching) Noble Vasantaka, stay a moment!
> (4.4) Vidūṣaka. (Seeing her) What, Susaṃgatā! Lady Susaṃgatā, why are you crying? Has some disaster befallen Sāgarikā?
> (4.5) Susaṃgatā. This is just what I will tell you. That poor girl—having set about a rumor that she was sent by the queen to Ujjayinī—when midnight had arrived, it is not known where she was taken.
> (4.6) Vidūṣaka. (With agitation) Ah, Lady Sāgarikā! A very cruel deed has been done by the queen!
> (4.7) Susaṃgatā. And this necklace of jewels, having despaired of life, was entrusted into my hand by her, saying: "Deliver it into the hand of the noble Vasantaka." So let the noble one take it.
> (4.8) Vidūṣaka. (Piteously) On such an occasion my hand does not stretch out to take this. (Both weep.)
> (4.9) Susaṃgatā. (With folded hands) Bestowing favor upon her alone, let the noble one accept it.
> (4.10) Vidūṣaka. (Reflecting) Or rather, bring it here, so that with this very thing I may distract my dear friend, who is grieving over separation from Sāgarikā.
> (4.11) (Susaṃgatā brings it near.)
> (4.12) Vidūṣaka. (Taking it and inspecting it with astonishment) Susaṃgatā, from where came her acquisition of such an ornament?
> (4.13) Susaṃgatā. Noble sir, I too asked her this out of curiosity.
> (4.14) Vidūṣaka. Then what was said by her?
> (4.15) Susaṃgatā. Then she, looking up and sighing deeply, saying: "Susaṃgatā, what is the use of this story to you?", began to weep.
> (4.16) Vidūṣaka. It is revealed indeed by this possession, difficult to obtain for ordinary people; she must certainly be born of a high lineage. Susaṃgatā, where is my dear friend now?
> (4.17) Susaṃgatā. Noble sir, the lord indeed, having stepped out of the queen's palace, has gone to the crystal-stone pavilion. So let the noble one go. I too will be in attendance on the queen.
> (Both exit.)
> Thus ends the introductory scene.
