> Then enters Vasundharā, sword in hand.
> (4.38) Vasundharā (approaching): Victory, victory to my lord! Rumaṇvat's nephew Vijayavarman, wishing to announce something pleasing, is waiting at the door.
> (4.39) King: Vasundharā, bring him in without delay.
> (4.40) Vasundharā: As my lord commands. (Going out and entering again with Vijayavarman.) Vijayavarman, here is my lord; let the noble one approach him.
> (4.41) Vijayavarman (approaching): Victory, victory to the lord! My lord, congratulations on Rumaṇvat's victory!
> (4.42) King (with satisfaction): Vijayavarman, has Kosala been conquered?
> (4.43) Vijayavarman: Through my lord's favor.
> (4.44) King: Well done, Rumaṇvat, well done! In no time a great enterprise has been accomplished! Vijayavarman, then tell the tale; I wish to hear it in full detail.
> (4.45) Vijayavarman: Lord, listen. A few days after leaving here by my lord's command, Rumaṇvat, having marched with a mighty host irresistible with its countless elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers, blockaded the gate of the king of Kosala, who was stationed in the Vindhya fortress, and began to pitch camp.
> (4.46) King: And then? And then?
> (4.47) Vijayavarman: Then the lord of Kosala too, unable out of pride to endure humiliation, prepared his army, which consisted mainly of elephants.
> (4.48) Vidūṣaka: Vijayavarman, tell it quickly! My heart is trembling.
> (4.49) King: And then? And then?
> (4.50) Vijayavarman: My lord, having resolved
> To fight, he came forth from the Vindhya and immediately confronted him, blocking the quarters
> With an array formed of a host of lordly elephants, like another Vindhya mountain;
> Then, releasing arrows with fury, falling \[upon the foe\] whose foot-soldiers were crushed by rutting elephants,
> Rumaṇvat, his impetuosity doubled by gaining what he had longed for, in an instant advanced against him. // 68 // (4.5)
> Moreover:
> While heads were repeatedly severed by the clashing of weapons that shattered helmets with missiles,
> While rivers of blood surged, and sparks flew in the blazing heat from clashing weapons,
> Challenging \[our men\] at the vanguard of the battle, that king of Kosala, when his main army was broken—
> (4.51) King: What? Were our forces broken too?
> (4.52) Vijayavarman:
> —was slain on his rutting elephant with hundreds of arrows by Rumaṇvat alone. // 69 // (4.6)
> (4.53) Vidūṣaka: Victory, victory to your honor! We have won! (Dances.)
> (4.54) King: Well done, king of Kosala, well done! Even your death is praiseworthy, since even your enemies extol your manly valor in such a way.
> (4.55) Vijayavarman: Rumaṇvat too, having stationed my elder brother Jayavarman in Kosala, has been advancing slowly, accompanied by the entire army, which consists mainly of elephants and is wounded by blows.
> (4.56) King: Vasundharā, tell Yaugandharāyaṇa: let a favor from me be bestowed upon him.
> (4.57) Vasundharā: As my lord commands. (Exit with Vijayavarman.)
