Vararuci: "On this path of poets—graceful because of arrangements clear in their words and made appealing for the enjoyment of connoisseurs—the intellect of only the wise flashes forth. This path is like the side-glance of a high-born lady, not tainted even by a trace of frivolous passion; it is indeed beyond the sphere of common courtesans. The meaning is that the aesthetic flavor of poetry can be experienced only by refined, appreciative scholars; it has a restrained, well-defined order, like the modest sidelong glance of a lady of good family, and is not like the wanton glances cast here and there by courtesans."
