After that, finding the assembly devoid of the king, the scholars began to blame him: "Ah, what ignorance of the king! What benefit is there in serving him? To his dependent poets, knowledgeable in the Vedas and Śāstras, he gave one lakh. What is the value of even this, displeased as they are? He is just a village poet. What cleverness does he have?" While such a clamor arose, a scholar arrived: wearing gem-studded earrings of gold, dressed in exceedingly fine clothes, musk applied all over his body like a prince, his head adorned with fresh flowers, captivating with sandalwood unguent—like pleasure embodied, as if poetry itself had assumed physical form, like a flood of the erotic aesthetic flavor, like Mahendra in visible form descended upon the earth. Seeing him, that circle of scholars became filled with fear and astonishment. He bowed to everyone and said: "Where is King Bhoja?" They told him: "He has just gone into the palace."
