In the history of Sanskrit literature, two scholars named Ballāla are mentioned: one whose active period is considered to be the second half of the ninth century, who was the author of the allegorical poem named Ballālaśataka; and the other, the creator of the Bhojaprabandha. The full name of the author of the Bhojaprabandha was perhaps Ballālasena, and he probably lived in the sixteenth century.
