33.p1
Again, the statuette said to King Bhoja: ‘O King Bhoja, King Vikramāditya was of such a nature. You, too, are not ordinary. Both of you are incarnations of Nara-Nārāyaṇa. At this present time, there is no king other than you of most pure conduct, skilled in all the arts, distinguished by such virtues as generosity. By your grace, the expiation of sins has occurred for us thirty-two statuettes, and release from the curse has also come to pass.’ Bhoja said: ‘How did your curse come about? Relate the original account of that.’ When he had said this, the statuette related: ‘O King, listen. We thirty-two celestial maidens were companions of Pārvatī and were the objects of her supreme love. Listen to each of our names: Sukeśī 1, Prabhāvatī 2, Suprabhā 3, Indrasenā 4, Anaṅgajayā 5, Indumatī 6, Kuraṅganayanā 7, Lāvaṇyavatī 8, Kāmakārikā 9, Candrikā 10, Vidyādharī 11, Prabodhavatī 12, Nirupamā 13, Harimadhyā 14, Madanasundarī 15, Vilāsarasikā 16, Manmathajīvinī 17, Ratilīlā 18, Madanavatī 19, Citrarekhā 20, Suratagahvarā 21, Priyadarśanā 22, Kāmonmādinī 23, Candrarekhā 24, Haṃsaprabodhā 25, Kāmaśaronmādinī 26, Sukhasāgarā 27, Madanamohinī 28, Candramukhī 29, Lāvaṇyalaharī 30, Marālagamanā 31, Jaganmohinī 32. While we were seated upon the priceless throne, Parameśvara cast his gaze upon us with love and playful charm. Seeing him, the goddess Pārvatī angrily cursed us:’

‘Becoming lifeless statuettes, attach yourselves to Indra's throne.’ Then, bowing down, we begged for an end of the curse. That goddess, her heart softening with compassion, spoke: ‘When that throne is brought to earth by Vikramāditya, and having ruled for many years upon that throne, when he dies, that throne will be deposited in some holy place; thereafter, it will pass into the hand of King Bhoja. Having taken it to his city and installed it, as he strives to mount it, he will hold converse with you, and when the deeds of Vikramārka are related by you to Bhoja, then an end of the curse will be attained.’ So, we are pleased with you; choose a boon. King Bhoja says: ‘What do I lack? Every kind of thing is present. Even so, something is requested for the sake of benevolence towards others. May the maturity, prowess, fame, fortitude, generosity, and other virtues of those mortals who hear and recite the deeds of Vikramārka increase; let this chronicle remain uninterrupted upon the surface of the earth until the end of the aeon; let there be no fear for listeners from spirits, ghosts, fiends, witches, sorceresses, pestilence, demons, and the like; let there be no fear for them from snakes and the like.’ The statuettes said: ‘O King Bhoja, let it be just as you say.’ Having granted this boon, they all went to their own abode. Then King Bhoja, having Maheśvara installed upon that throne that had been set up atop a palace studded with wondrous gold and priceless nine gems, worshiping the god and the throne with the sixteen modes of worship, and protecting the castes and life stages according to one's own duty, ruled the earth.

Hearing this story told by Parameśvara, Pārvatī was exceedingly pleased. Thus ends the Dvātriṃśatputtalikākhyāna. Again the statuette said to King Bhoja: "O King Bhoja, King Vikramāditya was such a man. Nor are you an ordinary man. Both of you are incarnations of Nara-Nārāyaṇa. In this present age there is no king other than you whose conduct is most pure, who is skilled in all the arts, and distinguished by qualities such as generosity. By your grace, the sin of us thirty-two statuettes has been removed; our release from the curse has also come about." Bhoja said: "How did your curse come about? Tell the original account of it." When this was said, the statuette related: "O King, listen. We thirty-two celestial maidens were companions of Pārvatī and objects of her supreme affection. Hear our individual names: Sukeśī 1, Prabhāvatī 2, Suprabhā 3, Indrasenā 4, Anaṅgajayā 5, Indumatī 6, Kuraṅganayanā 7, Lāvaṇyavatī 8, Kāmakārikā 9, Candrikā 10, Vidyādharī 11, Prabodhavatī 12, Nirupamā 13, Harimadhyā 14, Madanasundarī 15, Vilāsarasikā 16, Manmathajīvinī 17, Ratilīlā 18, Madanavatī 19, Citrarekhā 20, Suratagahvarā 21, Priyadarśanā 22, Kāmonmādinī 23, Candrarekhā 24, Haṃsaprabodhā 25, Kāmaśaronmādinī 26, Sukhasāgarā 27, Madanamohinī 28, Candramukhī 29, Lāvaṇyalaharī 30, Marālagamanā 31, Jaganmohinī 32. We were seated upon a priceless throne; Parameśvara cast his gaze upon us with love and amorous play. Seeing him, goddess Pārvatī cursed us angrily:

"May you become lifeless statuettes attached to Indra's throne!" Then, prostrating ourselves, we begged for an end of the curse. That goddess, her heart softened with the juice of compassion, said: "When that throne is taken down to the earth by Vikramāditya, and having reigned on that throne for many years, when he dies, that throne will be buried in some sacred place; thereafter, it will come into the hands of King Bhoja. Having brought it to his city and consecrated it, as he strives to ascend it, he will hold conversation with you; when the life of Vikramārka is explained by you to Bhoja, then the end of the curse will be attained." Therefore we are pleased with you; choose a boon." King Bhoja said: "What do I lack? All manner of things are present. Even so, I ask for something for the sake of benevolence towards others. May the maturity, prowess, fame, courage, generosity, and other virtues of those mortals who hear and recite the life of Vikramārka increase; may this life remain unbroken on earth until the end of the aeon; may the listeners have no fear of spirits, ghosts, fiends, witches, sorceresses, pestilence, demons, and the like; may they have no fear of snakes and the like." The statuettes said: "O King Bhoja, let it be just as you say." Having granted this boon, they all went to their own abode.
