Sweet, sour, saline, bitter, pungent, and astringent:
these are the six tastes residing in a substance, and each preceding one brings greater strength than the subsequent.
Likewise, having smelled the vapor of cooking rice flour and white-stalked apāmārga, jīvaka, ṛṣabhaka, the central stalk of śaṅkhapuṣpī, sahacara, nagnajit, and agnijihvā, or eight banyan shoots, a woman standing on the threshold should administer that juice through the nose as before.
\[One should administer\] a sour gruel cooked \[with drugs\] that kindle the digestive fire and digest \[undigested matter\] to one suffering from fever with diarrhea.
Using this guiding method, the wise physician should also design other \[prescriptions\].
Consisting of an uneven number of syllables, not harsh, clear in meaning, charming,
easy to pronounce, ending in a long syllable, and possessing the name of a blessing.
