daśamo 'adhyāyaḥ/
7.10.1
athātaḥ sudhākalpaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ/
Now we shall explain the formulation of sudhā.
7.10.2
iti ha smāha bhagavānātreyaḥ//
Thus said the reverend Ātreya:
7.10.3
virecanānāṃ sarveṣāṃ sudhā tīkṣṇatamā matā/
saṅghātaṃ hi bhinattyāśu doṣāṇāṃ kaṣṭavibhramā//
Of all purgatives, sudhā is considered the sharpest; / for it swiftly breaks through the accumulation of doṣas, with violent perturbation.
7.10.4
tasmānnaiṣā mṛdau koṣṭhe prayoktavyā kadācana/
na doṣanicaye cālpe sati &mārgaparikrame//
Therefore, it should never be used in a mild bowel, / nor when the accumulation of doṣas is small, provided the channels are clear.
7.10.5
pāṇḍurogodare gulme kuṣṭhe dūṣīviṣārdite/
śvayathau madhumehe ca doṣavibhrāntacetasi//
In anemia, abdominal disease, gulma, dermatosis, one afflicted with latent poison, / swelling, madhumeha, and when the mind is perturbed by doṣas—
7.10.6
rogairevaṃvidhairgrastaṃ jñātvā saprāṇamāturam/
prayojayenmahāvṛkṣaṃ samyak sa hyavacāritaḥ//
knowing a patient gripped by such diseases to be strong, / one should administer mahāvṛkṣa; for when properly applied,
7.10.7
sadyo &harati doṣāṇāṃ mahāntamapi saṃcayam/
dvividhaḥ sa mato 'alpaiśca bahubhiścaiva kaṇṭakaiḥ//
it immediately removes even a great accumulation of doṣas. / It is considered twofold: with few thorns and with many thorns.
7.10.8
sutīkṣṇaiḥ kaṇṭakairalpaiḥ pravaro bahukaṇṭakaḥ/
sa nāmnā snugguḍā nandā sudhā nistriṃśapatrakaḥ//
The one with many thorns is superior to the one with few very sharp thorns; / by name it is snuk, guḍā, nandā, sudhā, and nistriṃśapatraka.
7.10.9
&tau vipāṭyāharet kṣīraṃ śastreṇa matimān bhiṣak/
dvivarṣaṃ vā trivarṣaṃ vā śiśirānte viśeṣataḥ//
Having slit those two, the intelligent physician should extract the milky sap with a knife, / [from a plant] two or three years old, especially at the end of the dewy season.
7.10.10
bilvādīnāṃ bṛhatyā vā kaṇṭakāryāstathaikaśaḥ/
kaṣāyeṇa samāṃśaṃ taṃ kṛtvā 'aṅgāreṣu śoṣayet//
Making it equal in amount to a decoction of bilva and the rest, or of bṛhatī, or of kaṇṭakārī individually, / he should dry it over coals.
7.10.11
&tataḥ kolasamāṃ mātrāṃ pibet sauvīrakeṇa vā/
tuṣodakena kolānāṃ rasenāmalakasya vā//
Then he should drink a dose equal to a jujube fruit with saubīraka, / or with husk-water, or with juice of jujubes, or of āmalaka,
7.10.12
surayā dadhimaṇḍena mātuluṅgarasena vā/
sātalāṃ kāñcanakṣīrīṃ śyāmādīni &kaṭutrikam//
or with wine, curd scum, or citron juice; / sātalā, kāñcanakṣīrī, śyāmā and the rest, and the three pungents,
7.10.13
yathopapatti saptāhaṃ sudhākṣīreṇa bhāvayet/
kolamātrāṃ ghṛtenātaḥ pibenmāṃsarasena vā//
As available, he should impregnate them with the latex of sudhā for seven days; / then he should drink a jujube-sized dose with ghee or with meat broth.
7.10.14
tryūṣaṇaṃ triphalāṃ dantīṃ citrakaṃ trivṛtāṃ tathā/
snukkṣīrabhāvitaṃ samyagvidadhyādguḍapānakam//
The three pungents, triphalā, dantī, citraka, and trivṛt, / well impregnated with the latex of snuk, he should prepare as a jaggery drink.
7.10.15
trivṛtāragvadhaṃ dantīṃ śaṅkhinīṃ saptalāṃ samam/
gomūtre rajanīṃ &kṛtvā śoṣayedātape tataḥ//
Trivṛt, āragvadha, dantī, śaṅkhinī, and saptalā in equal parts, / he should put in cow urine for a night, then dry in the sun.
7.10.16
saptāhaṃ bhāvayitvaivaṃ snukkṣīreṇāparaṃ punaḥ/
saptāhaṃ bhāvayecchuṣkaṃ tatastenāpi bhāvitam//
Having thus impregnated them for seven days, he should again impregnate them / for another seven days with the latex of snuk; then [perfumed powders] impregnated with that and dried,
7.10.17
gandhamālyaṃ &tadāghrāya prāvṛtya paṭameva ca/
sukhamāśu viricyante mṛdukoṣṭhā narādhipāḥ//
or smelling a garland of fragrant flowers [so treated], or wrapping himself in a cloth [steeped in it], / kings with soft bowels purge easily and quickly.
7.10.18
śyāmātrivṛtkaṣāyeṇa snukkṣīraghṛtaphāṇitaiḥ/
lehaṃ &paktvā virekārthaṃ lehayenmātrayā naram//
Cooking an electuary with a decoction of śyāmā and trivṛt, / with latex of snuk, ghee, and molasses, he should have a person lick it in proper dose for purgation.
7.10.19
pāyayettu sudhākṣīraṃ yūṣairmāṃsarasairghṛtaiḥ/
bhāvitāñchuṣkamatsyān vā māṃsaṃ vā bhakṣayennaraḥ//
Or he should make him drink the latex of sudhā with vegetable broths, meat broths, or ghees; / or a person should eat dried fish or meat impregnated with it.
7.10.20
kṣīreṇāmalakaiḥ sarpiścaturaṅgulavat pacet/
surāṃ vā kārayet kṣīre ghṛtaṃ vā pūrvavat pacet//
He should cook ghee with milk and āmalaka as in the case of caturaṅgula, / or prepare wine in milk, or cook ghee as before.
7.10.21
