# The Compendium of Caraka 5.9

English (machine translation) 5.9

- **Language:** English

### [5.9.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.1)

Now we shall explain the indriya entitled "Signs of Grayishness."

### [5.9.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.2)

Thus spoke the venerable Ātreya:

### [5.9.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.3)

Whose eyes have become grayish, lustreless, or greenish:
his disease has turned fatal, so the discerning \[physician\] should know.

### [5.9.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.4)

Unconscious, with dried-up mouth, and beset by diseases:
knowing his lifespan to be cut short, the wise \[physician\] should avoid him.

### [5.9.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.5)

Whose veins are greenish and hair follicles closed:
that person, craving sour things, meets death from pitta.

### [5.9.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.6)

Whose bodily extremities appear handsome while his body withers
and his strength declines: pulmonary consumption destroys him.

### [5.9.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.7)

Burning heat in the shoulders, hiccup, vomiting of blood,
abdominal distension, and flank pain lead to death for a consumptive.

### [5.9.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.8)

A man who has wind disease, epilepsy, leprosy, swelling, or abdominal enlargement,
abdominal lump, madhumeha, or pulmonary consumption—

### [5.9.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.9)

these become incurable when loss of strength and flesh occurs;
in other disorders too, the physician should avoid them.

### [5.9.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.10)

A man whose abdominal distension was removed by purgation, who is attended by thirst,
and who becomes distended again after being purged, is just like a corpse.

### [5.9.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.11)

A man who cannot drink a beverage because of dryness
of the throat, mouth, and chest: he does not live.

### [5.9.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.12)

Observing weakness of voice, loss of strength and complexion,
and an improper increase of disease, one should predict death.

### [5.9.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.13)

Having upward respiration, departed body heat, groins stricken with pain,
and finding no comfort: the intelligent \[physician\] should avoid him.

### [5.9.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.14)

Speaking in a discordant tone, approaching his own death,
and hearing sounds where there are none: one should avoid him from afar.

### [5.9.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.15)

A weak man whom disease suddenly abandons:
Ātreya considers his life to have fallen into doubt.

### [5.9.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.16)

And if his kinsmen should plead with prostrations,
he should say, "Let him eat with broth"; he should not give him evacuation therapy.

### [5.9.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.17)

If no auspicious improvement is seen in him within a month,
even with various kinds of broths, his survival is difficult to obtain.

### [5.9.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.18)

Whose sputum, stool, and semen sink in water:
the wise say the end of his lifespan has arrived.

### [5.9.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.19)

In whose sputum various separate colors are seen,
and which sinks on reaching water: he cannot live.

### [5.9.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.20)

In whom pitta accompanied by body heat reaches the temples and faints:
that disease, called śaṅkhaka, destroys life in three nights.

### [5.9.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.21)

From whose mouth frothy blood repeatedly pours out,
and whose belly is pierced with colicky pains: such a one should be refused.

### [5.9.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.22)

Severe loss of strength and flesh, increase of disease, and anorexia:
in whichever patient these are observed, he does not live three fortnights.

### [5.9.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.23)

Here are two verses:

### [5.9.23\_1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.23_1)

These signs appear in men when death is imminent;
one should observe these and others of such kind.

### [5.9.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.24)

All of them are observed, but not all of them enter
a man about to perish; therefore, they must be recognized on every side.

### [5.9.24\_1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.med.samhita.caraka~en-mt.5.9.24_1)

Thus ends the ninth chapter, entitled "Indriya on Signs of Grayishness," in the section on sense faculties of the compendium composed by Agniveśa and redacted by Caraka.
