7.9.1
Now we shall explain the formulation of tilvaka.
7.9.2
Thus said the reverend Ātreya:
7.9.3
Tilvaka is considered to be lodhra, bṛhatpatra, and tirīṭaka. / Dried root bark of it, devoid of inner bark,
7.9.4
he should powder; having divided it into three parts, he should then decant two parts / with a decoction of lodhra itself; he should impregnate the third with that.
7.9.5
He should impregnate that portion again with a decoction of daśamūla; / having made the dried powder again, he should use it thereafter.
7.9.6
With curd, buttermilk, the scum of wine, urine, badara-sīdhu, / or with juice of āmalakas, one should then drink a palmful.
7.9.7
When meṣaśṛṅgī, abhayā, kṛṣṇā, and citraka are boiled in water, / he should steep marujas, and when that has become saubīraka,
7.9.8
one should always drink lodhra paste with an añjali of that; / or one should drink wine prepared with lodhra decoction that has stood for a fortnight.
7.9.9
In a droṇa [of decoction] of dantī and citraka, having boiled down one āḍhaka of water for each, / he should cast in one tulā of jaggery and an añjali of lodhra;
7.9.10
that is an excellent purgative for wine-drinkers after a fortnight. / Well impregnated ten times with a decoction of kampillaka,
7.9.11
one should drink a dose with a decoction of kampillaka itself. / Another electuary should also be made according to the caturaṅgula formulation.
7.9.12
With a decoction of triphalā, with ghee, honey, and phāṇita, / an electuary prepared with lodhra powder is excellent for purging.
7.9.13
With a decoction and paste of tilvaka, with sugar, / an electuary prepared with ghee is also excellent for purging.
7.9.14
Eight handfuls with fingernails each of trivṛt and the others separately / he should boil in a droṇa of water; when a quarter remains, he should cook a prastha of ghee
7.9.15
with those same [drugs] ground in bilva-sized portions, with urine and salt; / then he should drink a dose at the proper time; this is an excellent purgative.
7.9.16
He should cook ghee with lodhra paste, urine, sours, and salt; / and he should prepare two ghees according to the caturaṅgula formulation.
7.9.17
Here are the two verses:
7.9.17_1
Five with curd and the like; one with wine; and with saubīraka; / one ariṣṭa; likewise, one formulation with kampillaka;
7.9.18
three electuaries; and four with ghee are proclaimed: / sixteen formulations of lodhra roots are shown in this chapter.
7.9.18_1
Thus ends the ninth chapter, titled "Formulation of Tilvaka," in the Section on Formulation of the treatise composed by Agniveśa, redacted by Caraka, and, being unavailable, completed by Dṛḍhabala.
