2.4.1
Ātreya said: / Listen, O son of great intellect, to the prognostic sign regarding health in a person, / which accomplishes every purpose of the body and is the essence of the science of medicine.
2.4.2
A wise man who cannot properly see the Pole Star or gold, / for him, death certainly occurs within six months.
2.4.3
A man who cannot see the crescent sliver of the moon on the second day, and whose teeth fall out, / his life leaves his body quickly upon reaching three months and goes to the realm of Yama.
2.4.4
He who does not hear the ringing in his ears, while proud and dead lice fall from [his head] in numbers, / or who hears sounds inversely, abandons life upon reaching two months.
2.4.5
He who, having a healthy body, breathes through his mouth, whose eyes are reddish and face is dark, / whose tongue is cracked and teeth are black, even if seemingly healthy, quickly goes to the realm of Yama.
2.4.6
He who has a headache at dawn, who sees a halo around a lamp, / and who sees a film of dust, he goes to death; he does not have a long life.
2.4.7
He who sees the moon within the disc of the sun, or sees a halo without one, / or sees the sun's orb enveloped in smoke, goes quickly to death.
2.4.8
He who, when the sky is clear and cloudless, sees Indra's bow in the cardinal and intermediate directions, / and likewise lightning before his eyes, he quickly goes to the realm of Yama.
2.4.9
A man who, even with closed eyes, sees a flashing brilliance before him, / or who, upon closing the aperture of his ears, hears no sound at all,
2.4.10
And whose tongue somehow cannot distinguish merely the taste of bitter and other flavours, / and that man sees the dreadful approach of Vaivasvata,
2.4.11
A man whose body is exceedingly hot or cold, or turbid and not cold, / who has no horripilation even when sprinkled with ice-cold water, and who does not recover from a blow of a stick—he does not swiftly attain charming health again to behold people in this world, [departing] to the world of Śrāddhadeva.
2.4.12
He who does not see his own reflection in oil, water, a mirror, clarified butter, / or in another's eye, goes to the realm of Yama; know him to be truly bereft of life.
